trying to burn ubuntu(SOLVED)
    #14764664 - 07/13/11 08:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

but I'm having this problem, first, I need to download a partition disk iso, which I did, partition magic iso. then I downloaded an iso burner, magic iso. I dragged and dropped partition magic into the magic iso burner. then I try and burn it to the cd/dvd rom drive, with a disk in there, but it won't highlight the burn cd button because it says there is no disk found in the cd drive. this is so frusterating, I'm trying to create another partition, then install ubuntu on it.

I guess I don't NEED ubuntu, but I thought I'd do myself a favor and install it because sometimes it's a lot easier then windows, as long as you don't mind using the command prompt, and don't expect to be able to play a lot of games.

I don't suppose anyone will know why this isn't working, but jeez wtf, and I can play anything else in the dvd drive just fine. idk

windows xp professional oem. I haven't burned ubuntu yet, as I haven't partitioned off another space on the hard drive yet, hence the need to burn partition magic with magic iso burner

well that's nice. so if I have a western digital hard drive I can boot to it and use a partitioner AND install ubuntu? the thing though is, I already have linux burned to a cd, but if this will make it so much easier, I'll do it.

can you give me instructions? Thanks

U just download unbootin ..and it pretty straight forward u just locate the iso file and it would make the os boot from USB  ..and am guessing there would be a installation icon at the desktop from there u should be able to pick the drive u want to install it to and that's it

But I don't see the need if u have the cd already burned ..but it's still the same there should be an
Installation icon on the desktop

Sorry can't be more helpful but am on my iPad and it very limiting

ok, I don't really want a live boot install, i've installed a live cd before, and it can sometimes be patchy, although not always. but I still need to create another partition, so having just the boot os wouldn't work for that by itself. since I have the cd already, I'll just install it from that, when I finally get the partition magic problem worked out that is.

ok I think I know what's wrong. the problem is that the burner is looking for a cd-r cd, but what I have placed in the cd drive is a dvd-r disk. does anyone know how to change those settings?

Partitioning the Hard drive is part of the OS install.
Make sure your partitioning the correct Hard drive

that only allows you to make one partition. to make others you need a partitioner. if I install ubuntu right now it'll just reformat the partition I have windows on, the one I am currently using. I even tried THIS:

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
Under Service Status, click Start.
Try to write data to a CD.

and it didn't fix it. anyone??????

pretty sure you can't. I should've just created 2 partitions when I installed windows the first time

Do you have a DVD burner? if not, then a DVD-R won't be read by you CD burner.

Read this:
http://jamesmcdonald.id.au/it-tips/gnu-linux/linux-tools/shrink-your-windows-xp-ntfs-partition-to-half-size-and-install-linux-while-keeping-the-nt-bootloader

I'd recommend you get a USB key and install Linux to it, because CDs are last century

Why not use the ubuntu windows installer? Can't get more simple than that.

imachavel, if I am following you correctly and you already have an Ubuntu Live CD, I would suggest the following. I gather you have Windows installed on one large partition on your hard drive. Defrag Windows first. The live cd already comes with partitioning software, Gparted. What you'll want to do is boot up the live cd and gparted will allow you to resize your current partition that has Windows and then you create a new partition from the unused space.

Now from the livecd install Ubuntu to the new partition, it will recognize that you have Windows in the other partition and create a dual booting bootloader for you, there is an option for that during install.

There are other options for running ubuntu with windows, like Wubi* or a virtual machine, but the above seems like what you are wanting to do.

*Wubi allows you to install Ubuntu under Windows just like any Windows program. You would run Ubuntu while running Windows instead of separately, therefore no partitioning. Just a different way to go.

umm, who said it was a live cd? I'll boot to it now to find out. so that's the problem? yeah that would make sense, I'm putting dvds in a cd drive. but if this disc isn't ubuntu live, should I retry this partition magic thing on the other pc? it definitely has a dvd drive in it, I know for sure, the pc originally had two cd drives, one was cd r, the other was dvd/cd r, I removed the cd r and now just have the dvd.

any good instructions on finding gparted when the ubuntu cd comes up? Hey, thanks a lot man. I would've shot myself over this, but once again I was making it a lot harder then it really is. Thanks
Ok no it doesn't have a partiion editor, but it is a live cd like you said. I have a pc called pc-2(ingenius how I named it huh?) with a dvd drive so I'll just burn that partition magic, partition off another section, then install ubuntu. I can't wait! ubuntu is like a fine woman while windows is like a fucking whore. but for some reason ubuntu doesn't cost you $200 just to take her for a swing. I guess whores aren't always cheaper huh?

well I partitioned off a new spot easy enough. I used gparted, which was sweet because it's a linux partioner

anyway now I'm having a problem burning ubuntu, the 'try ubuntu without any changes to your computer' and also 'install ubuntu' don't seem to work. is my ubuntu disk broken? Wtf it's weird. I can't wait to get it installed. SOOOO sick of ONLY having windows. thanks for the help

If you can't get past the initial screen on the Ubuntu CD, yes either the original .iso or the disc could be corrupted. Download a new .iso and burn another CD and try again. You are almost there. Good luck!

ok burned a new one, then installed it. only thing is, once installation is finished, I needed to restart the computer, but the partition is gone! or so it seems. it just booted to windows, even if I tried to go to boot menu, it just gives me the option to load either cd drive or hard drive or usb etc. what does utility partition do?

anyway the new ubuntu I've heard is awesome, older distros of linux had some problems doing certain windows things. I've heard this new ubuntu can run games, movies, do just about any windows thing. I hope the world one day wakes up to linux. I mean it's hard to not use windows, most people don't buy custom built computers, in which can an oem will automatically have windows on it. But seriously linux keeps getting better and better as time goes on, hopefully one day windows will be almost obsolete. poor bill gates, he'll only have his $60 billion and no more microsoft

I think the coolest thing about unix, is the fact that server is free, and programming is almost unlimited. remember jurassic park, when the uses the old unix file system gui to turn on the locks in the park? that type of shit is possible with this os or what? anyway thanks a lot veggie appreciate all the help

which boot menu are you talking about? perhaps within windows you need to set the active partition.. within the gui in windows it's something like control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management i think (it's been a long ass time since using windows)... from there you should be able to see the partitions on your c drive and right click the proper partition and set it as active.
