My allen casing has a bad case of overlay. The surface is solid white and its not pinning. Should I cold shock? Can I re case it? Time does not matter to me so If I could re-case it wouldent be a big deal.

You have to expose the inner layers of mycelium. Overlay is of course dead mycelium. Scratch the surface with a sterile instument. You could then put another casing layer on top, and start again. Cold shocking the second time around would be good. Read the faq on scratching and overlay.

It's worth a shot.

So basically take a fork,comb the surface, and recase? How deep should Icomb it?Like 1-2 milimeters?

Overlay is dead so you have to scratch all the way down to the live mycelium, then apply a fresh casing layer. Be as clean as possible since any contams on your hands or instruments will end up deep inside the casing where it can cause a lot of trouble.

DO NOT coldshock after appying another casing layer. What cold shocking does is deter mycelial growth to encourage pinning. So if you apply another casing layer then cold shock the mycelium won't colonzie the new casing layer.
