air exchange
    #1476148 - 04/20/03 12:01 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

when jars are incubating do they need air exchange?
i have three jars incubating in a sealed aquarium temp is at 84F, humidity is at 64%
the jars have the lids on them with the 4 holes from being innoculated and i put tin foil on top of that. If they need air exchange what would you recommend to do that besides fanning out the aquarium every so often should i take the foil off or the lid or anything?

You can slightly crack the lids to jars open and invert the jars this will allow some built up c02 escape during the colonization process . Keeping jars in humid climate it kinda worthless at this point , so is fanning . Temp is the only important factor to concern yourself with .
Did not see holes in lid thing , just cover those holes with some micropore tape and invert , you are good to go , have patience and do not handle jars constantly .

Yes.

Not a factor during incubation.

Remove tape from holes (if taped), loosen lid slightly, loosen or remove foil.

thank you for the input

if there isn't good airflow could the cause colonization to slow?
my jars have been incubating for almost two weeks... two of them are coming along rather nicely, one is really far behind but i have patience for these things. I'm excited for a final product of course, but you know it's worth the wait!

There is no need to fan, if that's what you mean.

Yes not allowing some air exchange (letting c02 escape) will slow growth in the later stages especially .
So use some micropore tape , or loosen the lids , and invert . C02 settles to bottom , and slowly escapes thru pores in tape (micropore tape by 3M ), or the slightly vented lid .
The slow ones may be shy !
What method of inoc did you use ? Syringe ?

yes... i used syringe. Actually the one that is going slowly i reinnoculated four or five days ago and the growth has doubled but it's still behind. I posted that i did it and some people here advised against reinnoculating but the jar is fine. no contaminates and twice as much growth as it had so hey, i'm happy.

by the way... whenever i say "I" I actually mean "YOU"
in the paragraph above atleast.

and "I'M" means "YOU'RE"

Hello all first time grower.
Ive got 2 pf jars (10% growth) and they are completely sealed off, 2 layers of foil and a lid screwed on.

Is this ok or do i have to do something and change this?

you should remove the foil if you have a dry verm layer.

and also any tape that might be covering the inoculation holes.

thats more than enough...

when you pull the alum foil and tape away from the holes it will allow better gas exchange and the jars will take off faster.

The foil isn't air tight. It won't block gas exchange. I highly recommend leaving it on. If you are concerned just loosen it up a little bit. You should always have some sort of cover over your containers.

If you really think that verm layer is going to save you try this... Take a jar of rocks and drop a little sand in the jar and see how much makes it to the bottom. Then play with the jar like you would a PF jar and see how much sand is on the bottom. Contams are much smaller than grains of sand if the rocks were the size of verm bits. The rocks will stop some of the sand from getting to the bottom, but not all of it.

I have been doing it this way for years....

and I never get a contam from leaving the inoculation holes uncovered.
