Anyone do smoothies/protein shakes?
    #14160532 - 03/21/11 05:38 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I work in a grocery store, so I tend to come home every day with whatever fruit or vegetable happens to be on sale. A lot of it goes bad before I can eat it though, so there's always random half eaten produce taking up space in my fridge. Lately I've been tossing it in the blender with a little protein powder, water, and honey, and too my suprise I seem to have discovered a way to completely knock out the muchies for myself.

So far I've tried several different mixtures of carrots, cucumbers, banana, apple, and spinach, which all have been really tasty. Anyone have any suggestions?

well this is unrelated but for the food that you dont blend into smoothies but dont manage to eat, maybe you can consider starting a worm bin.

it would be a great use of the extra food : )

The worms can have it when I'm done with it.

I personally like to use banana as a base, add orange juice, then whatever else I got.  The banana/orange combo will make just about anything else taste good.  Also good with pomegranate.  I once did chocolate protein with it.  Not too bad, kinda like one of those chocolate oranges you can get at trader joe's.

i dig green smoothies a lot!

I always start out with a base of 2 apples and a bit of water, add green: kale, spinach, leafy lettuces, cilantro, watercress, parsley... are some favorites.
a carrot, stalk of celery.. also good additions.
I keep bananas in the freezer an always blend one of those in at the end to give it an extra kick and great smoothie consistency.

Experimenting with raw cacao and nut butters can be interesting too.
You can also add herbal supplements in too. Sometimes I'll throw in some gingko powder, or a spoonful of coconut oil.

The possibilities are endless and the body loves this stuff. I usually stick with a ratio of 40% greens & other veggies / 60% fruit.

If you decide to get real serious about the green smoothies, I suggest getting a Vita Mix blender.

It gets really fun during the summer when everything is in season and more fresh fruits are available. Grapes are another awesome fruit base in addition to apples.

Enjoy experimenting!

I made them for a long time, even had a smoothie blender with spicket.

I always used fat free plain yogurt and some sort of juice as a base and then added whatever frozen fruit was on sale that week and half a banana.

Great tasty and healthy way to start out the day.

Yeah, I use yogurt every now and then. Though I've been using frozen bananas and vanilla soy milk as my base lately.

Berries, and fruits freeze them.  Throw in blender and let it sit in some milk/soy milk and yogurt for about 30 seconds.  Blend.  Some things to consider adding for health reasons.  Wheat bran, flax seed, hemp seed, etc.

I also like to mix in some granola or grapenuts (after blending for that extra crunch.

Smoothies freeze pretty well too. If your fruit is going bad, blend them up and then freeze them.

I was just in hawaii visiting some family and I had a fresh smoothie every morning.
We would use some frozen berries, apple bananas, papaya, mango and some yogurt or soy milk. blend then top with some granola and youve got a tasty treat on your hands, my friend.

I usually rock two or three huge handfuls of fresh spinach, along with 1/3 cup of frozen berries and a splash of fruit juice (to allow the mixture to flow better), and that's good enough right there but if I have fresh fruit on hand, I'll throw in a banana or mango (and if the fruit ain't cold, I'll also throw in a couple ice cubes).  I've used up to 80% spinach and it's still very palatable; such a neutral tasting veggie, it's perfect to get some good daily raw green intake in smoothie fashion. :smile2:

There good for ya, but ya should have the best blender available, ya need to clean and dry it well after every use. Juicers are great too. If your pour ya could just eat whole fruits with milk. Theres more food value that way.

What's so important about cleaning/drying after each use?
Not to say I'm leaving my wares dirty, but I almost always just let it air dry.

I'm rockin' some pretty solid equipment:

    Vitamix Super 5000 (blender)

    Green Star Twin Gear (juicer)

Fresh out the Vitamix (spinach, blueberries, banana, juice):

Man, I really want to get a nice blender like that, but I just can't afford to drop that kind of cash for smoothies.

I think I'm going to order a Waring PBB204 next week. It's only 100.00, and it seems to get decent reviews. Right now I'm using some POS from the 80's called a "blendor", so pretty much anything would be a step up.

Honestly, I've had plenty of great smoothies from budget blenders.  The fancy Vitamix is nice 'cause its so darn quick (it's also nice to use at specific speeds in order to obtain specific textures for sauces/soups or ground nuts/seeds), but for your average smoothie, it's not necessary.

Yeah, vitamixer is the way to go, pretty expensive though, too bad your not my neighbor. They gotta be cleaned well afterwards cos bacteria builds up in them and can give you a chronic sore throat and digestion problems. Its really important that the rubber gasket is completely dry. Thats where most of the bacteria concentrates.
