Has anyone tried adding a bit of vermiculite to their grain jars to help stabilize moisture "sweating" in the jars?
I was thinking a 10:1 ratio grain to verm...
Anyone? My searchfu is weak couldn't find much on it

I have been thinking in doing the same thing. It would work unless you had dry grain to begin with, which would than work against you! But, 10% is safe enough to take a gamble.

I'd advise not to. The moister level in a jar is very precarious thing and that imho would disturb it. Condensation in the jar is a natural part of the jar's life. Just make sure to keep them in a stable temperature and you'll be fine. I'm living proof that RR's grain tek is flawless, in the last couple of years that I've been doing it, I've never had moister problem.

I added some ordinary garden compost to a grain jar once. STRONG growth, made a fluffy strain more rhizo. I don't do it because it's messy.

I prep my jars way on the wet side by not letting my grain sit to dry, I just strain after my boil and load my jars. works 99% of the time for me, only had 2 or 3 out of 5-6 hundred go bad...

I have FINALLY written up a couple teks as to how SHP has done things in the past. DISCLAIMER: This is not for the newbie to mycology, and not going to work for everyone! This is simply what works for one person when other teks and methods have failed miserably!
