Pup Removal * 1
    #14751008 - 07/11/11 12:13 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Forgive me if this has been covered some place else. I have a Loph that I grafted on to a pereskiopsis last year. It now has 3 pups on it. I am wondering what the best procedure would be to remove them and root them on their own. Thanks in advance.

Oh, they are gorgeous!
Hard to judge scale- are they about a centimeter across?

Yes they are a little over a cm. It's sister plant has bloomed twice for me this summer. I sprouted these seeds and grafted them last May.

Great work, fantastic! :congrats:

I don't have any real advice, I just wanted to ogle the pups.
My only suggestion would be to treat them like any other cactus, let them get big enough to start to "pinch off" on their own, then cut, dry, root.
But wait for an expert to say something, don't take my advice or any risk with that beauty.

Thanks for the complement. I appreciate it.

This, pretty much.
The bigger they get, the more energy they will have to put out their own roots. So if you're nervous about them being not big enough to have the strength to create tap roots, give them some time to grow into a more fitting size.
If you're not sure about the size, take a picture with the pups next to a quarter/ciggarette/lighter so we can have a reference for comparison.

Those are beautiful specimens by the way. Congrats on the flowers; get any seeds?

Thanks for the tips and complements everybody! Here are some more pics. Here are the pups from a different angle.
These are flower shots of the sister graft about 2 weeks ago.

I think it is too early to know about seeds, but one of the flowers form before seems to have formed a fruit. I sure hope so.

I think it takes a full year from flower to ripe fruit?

I'd say the pups are getting about ready, and sooner or later, in peyote time, you should cut one off as a button.
Let it grow a dry callus, then plant it. That's my newbish opinion.
I'd leave the other in place until that one rooted.

~2 months from flower to fruit, then a few more weeks to ripen.

This. From my experience this time can vary from specimen to specimen. Mine popped out fruits less than two weeks after flowering; it only took maybe another week to get a mature fruit.. Almost all of the seeds were ripe, too.

Fruits mature much faster here than MostlyHarmless stated, but fruits take 6-8 weeks to appear IME.
