I downloaded TOR but it's SO slow!
Is there any way to do this more efficiently?

Turn off all cookies but manual exceptions.
Use a different browser such as k-meleon. (not chrome basically)
Don't use google, or google products.
Hook up to open wifi networks.
use a few proxies
hmmm what else...

Seriously? I use Chrome, FF and IE all on the same machine, and Chrome offers the smoothest browsing experience. I have next to no plugins though, in any of the browsers.

but what about your public i.p.? doing all this will remove the ability of a person being able to see your i.p.? even if you visit their server? from what I know, if you visit someones web site, and their domain exists on their actual server, they can see your i.p., which I guess truthfully isn't very common unless a back end is needed. meaning you are actually interacting with their server.
for example the shroomery. it sucks, but it's true. this isn't a web page you just skim by, would k meleon let you visit this site and they can't see your public i.p.? it's gotta be impossible how far does proxy go?

I suggest trying the Cocoon FF extension (getcocoon.com).
I installed it last night after reading this article.
It's ideal for laptops using public wifi, which was my main interest. It seems to do all that TOR does plus provides disposable email addresses for extra privacy; for mailing lists, registering on sites, etc.
The big difference to me between TOR and Cocoon is speed. I haven't noticed any slowdown at all.

It also appears that cocoon is centralized rather than distributed. You gain speed, but you give up a bit of "security". As an example, if LEO puts packet sniffers at the ISP cocoon uses, and you connect to a non-encrypted site, the through data mining, looking at timing offsets, packet sizes, etc, LEO will be able to link the encrypted incoming stream to the unencrypted outgoing stream. Even though the payload of the incoming stream is encrypted, the packet routing information is not, therefore they can track you down. Even if you are connecting to an encrypted endpoint, given enough time and data analysis, they will be able to link your incoming to your outgoing, they just won't be able to read what you are doing.

cocoon doesn't work with some add-ons
get a nice PC if you want to be really safe and use tor
But if you're just browsing sites then you're not getting watched. They'll get your logs from your ISP
