Jars to bags, a simple way to grow
    #14743406 - 07/10/11 12:14 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I've done it all. I like greenhouses alot, but bags are quick and easy. Very little effort. Mix spawn and coir/verm in a tub, scoop into bags. Use clothespins or anything to clip bags closed for colonization and when done, poke holes all over the bag using a paperclip or nail or something heated up with a lighter, and put it in the light. Then you just harvest.

If something goes wrong, you toss the whole bag. Easy.

These are fully colonized, and just introduced to fruiting conditions:

Notice when its fruiting time I leave the top of the bag "open":

Pins a commin:

8 quarts jars with a brick of coir and a bunch of verm and gypsum will make about 6 bags this size and yield about a half pound on the first flush.

Just stick em in a closet with a light dangling over them and mist about once a day:

Follow me along here for the next batch:

LOVE it!!!

I just got 50 spawn bags in, and I'm picking up a few hundred turkey bags.... I have quite a few mono's to get going, but I think i'll be using bulk bags as well! Thanks for the added inspiration!!!!!

Crazy, man.  Strain featured?

When you say "8 quarts jars with a brick of coir and a bunch of verm and gypsum will make about 6 bags this size", Approx. how much (in percentiles) would you say, roughly, a bunch of each is, and, how full (approx.) are you filling those spawn bags to.  5 quarts?

Those look great. you dont even have to fan?

Could you use any type of bag (like a large zip lock)since you dont have to sterilize?

Bet you can use any type of bag (I would) to colonize and fruit inside of, so long as you don't kick them around like soccer balls while the sub. is in there, "doing it's thing".

I'm a little confused, do you leave the bags fully open during colonization or peg them loosley shut? Do you live in a naturally humid environment?

I'm doing this next. I'm surprised at how little side pinning there seems to be

You'd want to mix, just like if you were doing grains

thanks, I was thinking of getting into mycobags before I started doing bulks and monotubs, I just got finished with my first grow and I noticed potency was kinda low. I ate my whole first flush(32 grams) and had a nice trip with very few visuals. it was more of a head trip and I wish it was alittle more visual but it taught me I could eat alot more and not spaz lol.

Yeah I noticed that a bit with my cakes, I'm doing a wbs/coir combo right now, so if ya want I'll let ya know how that compares. Wish I wouldve seen this before I picked up some tins tho.

Any bag works, with a filter. Ziplocks, ovenbags ect are no good, no filter. Although they could be modified if you really want it to work, I wouldnt really suggest it. You can get the bags at unicornbags.com or other places I'm sure if you search. You have to buy in large quanities from that site, but then theyre about a quarter a piece.

For colonization the bag top of the bag is folded over and clothespined. The only GE is the filter. When its fruiting time, you leave the bag partially opened and put all the holes in it.

For side pinning, light is not the biggest problem, its the airspace that develops between a tub and the substrate as it pulls away, bags shrink with the substrate, so theres no air flow in the sides. After the first flush (or second) I turn them on their side in the bags and then its all "side pins" but actually on the top and bottom of the substrate.

My mix is eyeballed. I put a chunk of coir in a bucket and dump boiling water over it. Add verm til its about 50%ish. Dump in a good amount of gypsum (5%ish?). In the end, the bulk is about double the size of the 8 quart jars of spawn, so about 2:1 ratio, maybe. Or 1.5:1.

In the end exact amounts dont matter, its like cooking, you gotta look at what your working with. Dont give your spawn to much to colonize. Make sure you have enough verm and plenty of gypsum. Coir is just filler, add as much as you want as long as you dont dilute the spawn to much.

Also, when I make bags, I save some verm/coir to the side, and mix the main amount of it with the 8 jars of spawn. Then as I make each bag, I put 1 small haldful of coir/verm in the bottom of the bag, then the mixed substrate, then two big handfuls of coir/verm on top as a psuedo casing layer. The bags colonize for 7 days, by that time the main part of the substrate is colonized, but the bottom and top remain partially colonized for the first flush.

All of this will become clearer as the other thread (link in the first post) progresses, detailed step by step will be gone through the whole way, so if you want more details, be patient. It'll take a few weeks but there will be pictures too.

Strain is Texas, from sporeworks.
