Ignorance of The Law is no excuse!
    #14750770 - 07/11/11 01:17 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

As not one person in the USA (or other large nanny state) can site every law ever written that is still in force, what does this statement mean other than "Boy, are you fucked!"?

Since the start of 2000, Congress has created at least 452 new crimes. So the total number of Federal crimes as of the end of 2007 exceeds 4,450.

For a Christian Nation, we Americans are a bad, bad people that need to be watched 24/7 lest we stray.

Recently the cops harassed me and a friend for walking around a park at night. They actually put us in the back of the squad car (my friend had a pipe on him, which they found by searching him without consent, but I had nothing). When I asked what crime I would be charged with, they told me "lurking with intent to commit mopery."

I actually asked them if they were joking. Nope. Apparently it's a real crime. "Mopery" refers to wandering aimlessly. They were going to charge me with intent to wander aimlessly.

I think this would get some interesting play in the Politics forum.

Agreed- govt made to many laws. IMO if they only kept the laws that mattered the list would dwindle from the 4,000's to the low 100's or something around that area.

Guess that taught you a lesson...
No adventures - it’s illegal to wander aimlessly:confused:

Another fun fact is that ignorance of the law is an excuse for the cops when they violate your civil rights.

If the reasonable officer would not have known that his conduct was unlawful, than he is immune from suit- even when it is agreed by everyone that he violated the rights of the suspect (say by bashing in the door of someone's house who didn't have a warrant issued).

I find it amusing that the people who are charged with enforcing the laws tend to be among the most ignorant aboutthem, and even need little handbooks just to be able to find a suitable law to charge someone under.  If the law is so complex that even the professionals (ahem) can't understand it, than something needs to give.

Of course, when the person is convicted the police and courts are "just doing their job as the law requires), but when the officer is personally insulted that someone won't consent to a search, suddenly he becomes visibly emotional and starts yelling.  When marijuana legalization is brought up or handgun restrictions are sought to be eased, suddenly they aren't just doing their job as the law prescribes but suddenly have a viewpoint as to whether the law should exist.  The public respect for law enforcement has always been fraught with inconsistant logic. (for some reason the popular resentment of plaintiffs doesn't extend to the government in criminal cases, yet the average civil suit where at least some harm is alleged is met with skepticism)

It is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one's existence--that which makes its truth, its meaning--its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream--alone.

It's legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes that laugh and lips that cry
A restless tongue to classify,
All born to grow and grown to die
