I have listed some wedges on Bemushroomed. There's one left if anyone wants it. I have sent it to a spreader in the US who will make it available there, so would prefer if it's taken by another country. Cheers

Hi lionsman, I got the tube but it was sealed and when I placed som on agar it exploded into a mound of trich and black pin mold.

Damn! What bad news. I'm psyched about this mushroom. Lionsman, are you down for another try?
What is the recommended protocol for transcontinental culture shipping?

what temps are you running lionsman? also, did you sterilize or merely pasteurize your successful substrate?

Houdinihar. Temps were variable while these were growing. In the teens (C) growth was slow, but was rapid when it got warmer (25 C). I don't know whats optimum, but mid to late 20s C seems about right. All my substrates were sterilized. At some point it needs to be done on pasteurised straw, but I haven't had time yet.

The other day I had a jar, refusing to fruit for weeks. As it was already moldy and there was nothing to lose, I sprinkled some sterilized soil (old, sandy potting soil) on top, not enough to cover the surface completely, just to see what would happen. The mycelium vigorously grew through the soil and up into the air, collapsed, formed numerous knots and some turned into tiny eggs within a few days. So soil can definitely act as a catalyst for primordia formation, while microbes are not necessary.

Thanks guys! These eggs are really fascinating, I have to look at them every couple of hours.
Hi Vishal, this is wheat straw with 5% rice and a little bit of yeast extract, sterilized and inoculated with substrate spawn of the same kind. On straw alone this species only gives weak growth. Did you ever grow V. bombycina? There may be differences to V. volvacea.

no i have not yet grew any of those, but from the data i have read Vv, Vd(diplasia) and Vb (bombycina) can be grown on same substrates with same technic. Am about to get a culture from Lionsman in next week or so. Vishal.

Perhaps have a look here: Experimental cultivation of the silver-silk straw mushroom Volvarielle bombicyna (Per.ex.Fr) Sing. isolated in Vietnam Tran Thi Kim Dung and Pham Thanh Ho http://tainguyenso.vnu.edu.vn/jspui/bitstream/123456789/9759/1/Experimental%20cultivation%20of%20the%20silver.pdf
As Lionsmans strain is different, it would be extremely interesting if you could compare V.b. and V.v. on the same substrate and under the same conditions.
I'll look into the usability of spent Pleurotus substrate.

Hey,
That is a very interesting paper. Thanks for sharing! I read there that they used a "proportion of spawn/substrate is 2%." 1:50. Wow.
I will try some Volvarielle some time.
Take care,
Javadog
P.S. I should have mentioned my appreciation of the no-microbes factoid. I am not sure that they would not help, but the fact that you got fruits without them was not lost on me.

You're welcome! I'm always glad to spread some knowledge and pave the way for later experiments.
About the soil, I think it mainly helps with small amounts of substrate in less than optimum conditions. Otherwise this species should fruit fine by itself, just like V. volvacea.
The low spawn rate in that paper sounds plausible for straw with very little supplements and a long pasteurization time. On a closer look, there are some odd aspects regarding the amount of supplements. For rice bran, they say they tested 1, 5 and 10‰ (not %). Later they talk about best results with 2% bran. This raises suspicions, that they either mixed up numbers or units. So we better not fully trust in every word.
