Casing Layer... Efficiency vs. Effectiveness
    #14749372 - 07/11/11 01:59 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have read it is ideal, if you are not using a bulk grow tek, to have a non nutritious casing layer below your spawn. I have two options in mind the first(perlite) which I can reuse and will consider the efficient method... and the second (peat moss, verm, and gypsum) which I have read is very effective with a good pinset and fruiting, along with proper FAE and RH and light cycles....

Would putting gypsum in the perlite help at all?

I keep seeing a lot of different spawn to substrate ratios
(1:3), (1:4), and (1:5)

Does anyone know if any of these ratios would apply best to the above casing layers...

Don't use perlite as casing.

I use a 1:2 spawn ratio.

What species are you growing?

Grains require a casing layer to fruit, and perlite would be no different than placing broken beer bottles on top of your spawn.  If you're going to fruit plain grains, use a peat/verm or similar casing layer, and yes it should include gypsum and a buffer such as hydrated lime to prevent trichoderma from attacking the peat moss.

For bulk substrates, no casing layer is required or needed if you maintain proper fruiting conditions.

Thanks for the tips!

It looks like I'll go with verm/peat/gypsum/lime

With that being said, is a 1:2 ratio ideal?

Also, kind of a side note, I purchased clay pellets awhile back would anyone mix this with anything to create a good casing layer? or should I just stick with the trusted method above?
