pc: jar lids loose or tight
    #14749066 - 07/11/11 12:30 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I bought some vent filters(walmart)and cut my own filter disks...
My pressure cooker instructions want me to leave my jar lids slightly loose to allow for proper steam penetration. I can't really loosen my jar lids with these filters; otherwise the jar lids pop right off...
My question is this: can I leave the jar lids tight, since I punched a hole in the center of each lid? Would this single hole be enough for steam penetration?

I've almost got my project off the ground, and I really appreciate you guys answering these quirky questions. Will post pics of results...

You're good, the lids should be tightly screwed on top of all jars.

As long as they got holes in the top your fine!

Walmart doesn't have HEPA jar filters.  What did you use?

Pressure cooker instructions say to leave the jar lids loose when CANNING, so steam can vent, not penetrate.  However, we're not canning, so canning instructions need to be disregarded.

Lids on spawn jars should be fully tight before sterilizing.

Thanks again, RR.

Oh, you asked what filter I used...I used electrostatic "vent filters" from Walmart.  I read about them on this link:
http://www.lycaeum.org/mv/mu/_filters.html

I just cut them into shape and used 2 on each jar.  I know that nothing beats a HEPA filter, so I do have some on order.  But, I was anxious to get a few jars ready and going...
