Shrooms won't dry
    #14747646 - 07/10/11 08:08 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have had these f***ers under a fan for over a week now and while they have lost a lot of mass and are wrinkling, they are still flimsy as hell. I used to get my shrooms cracker dry with just a fan after 2-3 days, so this is puzzling me.

I've searched the forum and I think it may be due to the humidity, but my question is about whether these things are OK to eat. Do they have to be cracker dry or can they afford to be a little flimsy?

Thanks!

fan drying usually doesn't get them cracker dry, try some desiccant.

theres tons of different ways to go about it, just search for it.

They're certainly okay to eat. You may eat fruits with any amount of water in them. Drying is mainly used as a storage tactic.

If they're not completely dry, however, you'll want to eat them within the next couple of days.

24 hours in front of a fan followed by 24 hours in a desiccant chamber (sealed tupperware with damprid -> paper towels -> shrooms) is a great way to obtain crackery dryness.

what is the ambient humidity? my air dried fruits arent crisp like crackers, they are still a little soft and they are storing well.

Put them in a desiccant chamber or food dehydrator. I had mine in front of a fan for a week and they were not cracker dry whatsoever. I got a food dehydrator and now I've said good bye to non-cracker dry shrooms. It dried my entire flush over night.
