Silicone Drying Time?
    #14746246 - 07/10/11 03:20 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have 4 cups of rye berries being soaked and they're due to being PC'd at about 7pm pacific. But i just now prep'd the silicone injection ports at 2:15pm. Is that enough time to let them dry and cure or will the silicone still be too wet when i go to PC.

Allow silicone to dry 12-24 hours (depending on your regions humidity, (the higher the humidity, the longer you'll need to allot for drying and visa-versa) before PC'ing.

5 hours should be good enough if they are nice and warm. A good warm breeze is good too.

The pc cycle will finish the curing. Moisture and temperature increases the reaction that silicone goes through to harden up. I usually pc my spawn bags that I add silicone injection ports just 30 minutes after putting the blob on. They come out perfectly cured. They are on the outside of the bag however and Im not sure if the gases they release during curing might make your jars poisonous or something and fuck up your growth.

I'll put the lids in the sun while waiting the 24 hour soak of rye.

The moisture does something to make it cure faster....not sure what it is scientifically. The hotter the water the better. Heat lamp or a space heater will also make it cure faster.

sandman420 is correct, 1 part silicone cures with the aid of moisture and releases acetic acid during the cure. if i'm inpatient i will wait for the silicone to form a firm skin before tossing it in the pc; the steam definitely speeds the curing process.
