I'm going to be in Western North Carolina in Pisgah, Nantahala, and the Smokey Mountains this summer. I need a wifi or internet connection for my laptop when I'm off the grid in the deep woods on regular campsites or just spots deep in the woods. I am not a fan of campgrounds because I like to be alone with my group of friends with no others nearby listening to sometimes loud music and playing around with a lot of space. Can I get some kind of service to my laptop through a company satelite beaming me the web 24/7 anywhere in the country? Thanks

i use smart talks nokia e71 in the woods and it grabbs a signal . satilight internet is good choice for woods but spendy so you are stuck to cell tower internet or satilight .
make sure you can get cell signal with whatever carrier you choose b4 you get a cell phone internet dongle setup otherwise it wont matter at all .
satilight will work but like i said its spendy . u could try wildblue or hughesnet
for cell phone net u could try mifi, get the nokia e71 smart phone at wallmart and load the joiku spot app on it so it will broadcast your internet via the phones wifi card, or look into a few other carriers that do wifi cell hotspots. cell type internet will be the cheapest and needs almost no setup to be done just make sure you have a signal and enable the app or device of choice so the cell internet is broadcasted

Satellite requires too much power for hiking around. (not to mention the bulky equipment and shitty latency).
USB dongle data cards are good but tend to require more power than a cell phone, as they're not optimized for energy efficiency.
Cell phones are most energy-efficient, especially if you tether over USB. If you tether over wifi, I still suspect you'll get better batter life than with the USB dongle.
Verizon tends to work best in the backwoods. Look at off-brand no-contract verizon plans like Walmart's straight talk.
Obviously you want a lightweight netbook with a spare battery to go with your off grid internets. Better yet if you can get by with just a nice Android so you don't have to hoof any note/netbook around.
Good luck.
