Oxygen quantity consumed by the shrooms?
    #1463449 -

Hi, I have a question for those really clever about shroooms:

How much oxygen does the fruiting case consume? If I have for example, 2 litres of caseing, 2.5 inches thick, how much oxygen will this consume in 24 hours?

Anyone knows this?

I am planning a closed environment with moss that consumes CO2 and produces O2, and the mushroom caseings that consume O2 and consume CO2.
Any ideas?

Thanks

I don't think 'shrooms' consume oxygen, i am not sure on this, but i believe that what i've read is that fanning is to rid them of CO2 not to provide oxygen.

From what I understand, I agree with Raadt. The CO2 is a by-product of the digestion of the substrate. If the CO2 is left in the environment, the fungus gets suffucated and the odds of contams setting in raises.

Mushrooms(mycelium) DEFINITELY consume oxygen. This is evident if you observe the loss of mass of dry substrate mass during the colonization.

Exact figures are difficult to obtain, particularly for the fruiting phase.

I once measured the mass loss of a colonizing PF cake, the result was that after 20 days of colonization the mass loss of dry rice flour was 10%, this means that those 10% of the substrate were converted with oxygen to CO2 which then escaped.

i was curious how one would rationalize that an organism will produce co2 without consuming (converting, really) oxygen. nice links, anno.

Alright, they consume oxygen from the substrate, but do they infact 'inhale' oxygen from the surrounding environment? That was the basis for the original post, as RSS is attempting to use a plant (moss) that 'inhales' CO2 from the environment and 'exhales' O2.

What about other gases, would this setup reduce the need for air exchange?

there have been experiments and much speculation on using co2 converting plants within a grow area to more or less automate air exchange. lighting, contamination, bugs, and properly caring for the plants are all factors which, from what i have read, make the concept harder to implement than mechanical air exchange. this doesn't mean that the perfect organic method cannot be obtained of course.

They do in fact 'inhale' oxygen from the atmosphere in which they are immersed. I did an experiment a while back where I embedded an oxygen sensor in a sealed quart jar of rye. The sensor outputs a small voltage which is proportional to the oxygen partial pressure. It is possible to correlate this voltage to the oxygen fraction.

Over the course of 22 days, the rye colonized about 50% then stalled. The oxygen concentration dropped during that time from 21% to ~ 8%. The absolute pressure in the jar varied slightly, but the experimental error was still only about 2%. I wanted to also measure the CO2 concentration, but CO2 sensors are, unfortunately, prohibitively expensive.

So, the bottom line is mycelium does 'breath' oxygen.

I don't understand the technical qualities of your experiment (the talk about partial pressures and such), so please inform me if I am off base here. Is this drop in concentration proof that the oxygen was used up/converted, or could it indicate that there were simply higher levels of other gases, reducing the percentage of oxygen?

It means that O2 was depleted, and that was almost certainly caused by mycelium respiration. Higher levels of other gases, like CO2, affected the experiment by changing to total pressure in the jar, but that accounted for no more than a 2% error.

If you read the second link that I posted, you will find out the exact quantities of oxygen used by different species in liquid culture.

There was an interesting reference in the second link on using cooking oil with a carbohydrate as a sutible growing medium/substrate.

How could one add some carbs to cooking oil?
