First Grow - BRF DnR Tek - B+ w/pics
    #14739598 - 07/09/11 04:20 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

First of all, a big thanks to this community for the wealth of knowledge present in the forums.  Without having to post a single question, I easily, EASILY, found everything I needed with simple searches and by just browsing the posts in my spare time.  Cream rises to the top and there are a lot of people here who seriously know their shit.  So, once again, thank you.

I decided to grow my own because my connect could only seem to get them spore-adically at best.  (Sorry, I'm a sucker for terrible puns, <-- character flaw).  After some in depth research, I realized that for around 200 bucks (and probably much less for a frugal grower on a tighter budget) I could, hopefully, grow my own.  I have several trip-friendly acquaintances, and I'm really looking forward to seeing their faces when they open the presents I have in store for them this summer.

Things I did right (or things that at least seem right so far anyway).

1.)  Starting off with B+...simply because I heard it was a hardy strain and fairly fuck-up proof.  Sure the potency is apparently erratic, but I wanted to clear a mental hurdle with this first grow.  Find out that, yep, I can actually do this.

2.)  Using the BRF - Dunk-n-Roll tek. So far, so good.

3.)  Shotgun FC...though, after you see the pics I'm sure there will be at least a few facepalms.

4.)  Used a Humidifier / Air Exchanger

5.)  Thoroughly soaked / drained the Perelite before adding it to the FC.

6.) Maintaining a diligent spraying schedule. Even with the humidifier/air exchanger I still spray them 3 times per day. (This may belong in the Things I Did Wrong list.

7.)  Started small, only 4 jars/cakes to begin with.

8.)  Used a sterile glovebox/inoc chamber and followed all of the sterilization protocols (flame sterilized needle before first inoc, and between each new jar.)

8.)  Exercised patience (again, so far).

Just Some of the Things I Did Wrong.

1.)  When I couldn't find the widemouthed jars at any of my local stores I went ahead and added 12 of them to my order list from everything mushrooms.  Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with their product, but I forgot to factor in that during the shipping process, the jars (already filled with BRF/Verm mixture were probably going to get shaken up a bit.  My best guess the mixture got shaken/packed down too tightly in some of the jars. Not their fault.

I think this might be the biggest reason why only 1 of the 4 jars colonized 100%.  2 of the jars were at 90% and 1 only made it to 50%.  After 5+ weeks I finally popped them out because they all had at least a few pins, an the jar that colonized to 100% had an inch long mutie.  When I failed to see any more colonization with the other 4 after 3 days, I decided to birth them.

2.)  Too many holes in my shotty FC, and they're only 1/8th inch (I think) holes.  My line of thinking at the time being, 1/4" holes seemed huge.  So I drilled 4 times as many holes at 1/4th of the recommended size.  I figured that it would help retain humidity better, and I'm inclined to think that it does, but it would appear that my FAE is fucked, even with 4X as many holes, AND a ceiling fan in the room.

3.)  Fluctuating humidity levels.  I'm using the Tropicaire Reptile Humidifier and Air Exchanger because that was what they had on the everything mushrooms site and I'd seen a few other people mention it.  Using it in conjunction with a MillionAir Air Pump (the MA200), cranked to it's highest setting.  During the day, when I turn the ceiling fan off in the bedroom (which is where I currently have my FC) the humidity stays right around 90%.  As soon as the ceiling fan goes on?  The gauge on the electronic hygrometer (still waiting for the analog to arrive) drops down to 60% or less.  Every time. Even if I block the top, back, and front of the container. Yep, I know that screws the FAE, but I figured it would be OK since I was only blocking them off at night while the ceiling fan was on and since the sides were still unblocked.

Long story short, I should have stuck with the 1/4" holes.  While I do have pin on all the cakes, they are pretty small on 2 of the cakes.  I've only had 1 fruit reach full size so far, but it did so quickly (the original mutie from the 100% colonized jar.) I harvested it last night when I noticed that the veil had ripped.

I'm sure there are many, many, many other items to add to this list considering how poorly this first flush is going. You live you learn.

I have three inoc syringes left.  Golden Teacher, P. Azurscens, and Mazatapec.  Looking forward to seeing how they do after I clean up my process a bit and create a new shotty FC, this time, adhering to the 1/4" holes every 2" guideline!

Some pics of the progress / setup.

Initial batch of items I purchased. (not including pressure cooker, analog hygrometer, FC, and inoculation chamber.

Adding the first strainer full of Perelite to the FC just prior to birthing.

Just after cakes added to FC.

FC setup.

Mutie Day 6 (6 days after birthing.)

Mutie just before harvest (still day 6).

Another cake starting to show some promising growth.

You're doing well to have recognized your mistakes & learned from them.

I would recommend raising your chamber another inch or two for better airflow.  With a properly constructed SGFC, the humidifier and air pump are probably overkill.  Not sure exactly how that applies to your current SGFC.

You're on the right track.

I agree with the above poster...It looks like you are really close to having a very effective technique. Good job on not being too cheap about startup costs :cheer: and +5 :mushroom2: for buying RRs video.

I'll call your adaptation of the shotgun FC the birdshot FC

Thank you both for your replies!  I took your advice and raised the FC 2 more inches.

I'm really glad I bought the DVD's.  Most, if not all, of their DnR tek videos are online, but the section on creating spore prints and syringes was worth the price of admission alone to me.  I'll be self-sufficient by the time I'm finished harvesting my first batch.

Also, love the Birdshot FC description.  :-)

Humidifier is not necisarry for a SGFC, the 4+ inches of Perlite and 1/4 inch holes every "2" inches provides FAE and humidity. As the above poster said raise it up a few more inches. Other then that your off to a great start!!! Good Job! :headbang3:
