Breaking up grain by hand.
    #14741303 - 07/09/11 02:44 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I just tried breaking up a 100% colonised rye jar by smashing it against a catalogue. When I poured the grain into the coir, some large clumps were still present so I broke up  by hand with alcohol soaked gloves. I am worried that I have contained the substrate, anyone else done this before and had success ?

Probably was contaminated already, if not it probably is now.

It didn't smell contaminated, just over colonised as I have been away.

I've mixed horse manure/coir substrates without gloves many many times:shrug:

Do you shake them really hard before spawning? Ive had lumps from lazy shaking before, broke them up with alcohol sanitized gloves, and had no problems

Good to hear that some of you have had success in breaking up grains by hand. I probably could of shook them a bit harder ozzy but didn't want to make too much noise as my boy was sleeping
The jar was fully colonised for about 3 weeks as I've been on hols.
