Adding Gypsum to BRF
    #14736968 - 07/08/11 03:50 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

When adding the Gypsum to BRF substrate, in what ways does this help or what does it do?

Nutrients for the mycelium.  Calcium and sulfur mainly I believe.
Also good for extra moisture retention.
Although there is minimal benefit in brf cakes IME.
It's used more for grains and bulk.

Gypsum adds calcium and sulfur to the substrate, making them available to the mushroom mycelium, TRUE.  I disagree with the above 2 posters about gypsum having minimal benefits for BRF cakes.

Adding gypsum won't increase colonization time (in fact colonization'll most likely be decreased slightly).  During fruiting is where the benefits of the addition of gypsum'll be noted the most.

The addition of gypsum isn't mandatory, I always add agricultural grade, powdered gypsum, at 5% by volume of BRF mix, dry, before bring the mix to field capacity, loading into jars, then sterilizing.
