Amount of gypsum to use for pf jars between coarse/powdered gypsum?
    #14731324 - 07/07/11 01:52 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I know for powdered gypsum, everyone uses 1 tablespoon of it for every 5 1/2 pint pf jars using brf/verm.

I just got my 5 lb bag of organic garden gypsum in the mail today and it is a little coarse. Yes, I know you can use coarse gypsum & it's water soluble, but will I still use 1 tbsp per 5 jars or will I need a little more or little less since it's coarse?

I know with coffee beans, once you grind them, they take up more space...just wondering the exact amount for gypsum. Thanks.

I plan on knocking up 12 jars some time next week with some "r44" multispore from ralph.

I don't know the answer, but I would just grind it to powder and use your normal recipe.

Yah I know, but roger rabbit stated on another thread that it's not necessary to grind it up and that it will only shorten the life span of your coffee grinder. I don't want to use a hammer either because I don't want to introduce contaminants anymore than the air and other substrate materials will have already.

I use a large mortar and pestle for grinding things like that. A coffee grinder would be a bad idea LOL. Man, just eye ball it. Thats what I do. It dissolves and its really not going to make a huge difference whether you use 1 or slightly less or more than that.

Ok. Do you suggest I put the gypsum into the water, dissolve it, then add it to the verm? sorry, dumb question.

Course/raw a little more than powdered.

Powdered/food grade a little less than course.

I just asked the other day and RR said its about the same.

How cute...thanks! I wonder how I didn't find that one in the search.

If you're using it to make up jars that will be pressure cooked or otherwise sterilized later on, that will take care of the contaminants.
