Positive pressure chamber / laminar flow hood
    #14731297 - 07/07/11 01:46 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

So I was talking with a friend about mycology and blah blah, long story short we're going to try to put together a flow hood / positive pressure chamber / clean box, whatever you'd like to call it, for him.

I've been reading around a little bit about laminar flow hoods (this place was particularly helpful http://www.fungifun.org/English/Flowhood)and have learned a few things, but I know many of you (including RR) have much more experience with these things so I'd like to share with you what I've come up with in hopes of resolving/preventing possible issues. I know in laminar flow hoods laminar flow is really what allows them to work (duh...) but it seems like the same effect can be achieved by using a semi-closed work space with not entirely laminar flow. As long as the pressure inside the work space is kept high enough to provide laminar flow through any openings in the box without any eddies whipping air back in then nothing should be able to get it.

So here's what I've come up with. Kind of similar to what fastfred was talking about here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7273171#7273171

I'm thinking a 2'x1' HEPA filter. Acrylic front with holes cut for gloves to be taped in like a glovebox. The front would be ~1.5" short in the front and this would be the only opening (maybe even round off any sharp edges to allow more laminar flow). Let me know what you think.

I was also wondering if this design would work effectively with a cheaper HEPA filter, one not designed for laminar flow. As long as it was left running for a while before use the only place laminar flow would be important is at the openings.

why not tilt the thing on it's side & ditch the arm holes?

Seems like you're wasting a bit of time & effort adding an extra step to something that's been proven to work 100% of the time.

I agree with TL, lose the arm-holes.

Good luck,

Just like a traditional laminar flow hood you're saying?

I was thinking with this design the laminar part wouldn't be as important and, with a smaller opening, it wouldn't require quite as much volumetric flow. Meaning a smaller/cheaper blower could be used and possibly even a cheaper filter that is not designed for laminar flow in particular.

So in short I'd rather sacrifice some time and effort to make a flow hood that's less expensive but works just as well. Plus (I'm not sure if this is completely accurate or not), with a much smaller open area I feel like this design would be much less susceptible adverse environmental conditions (like a room with a draft).

blowers are free from local HVAC companies.

Hepa filter + wood = $200.

IDK what you're talking about making it cheaper. You're actually making it more expensive.
