Question about Coir casings and fresh air
    #14730598 - 07/07/11 10:52 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My friend always made his casings out of dung and has had spectacular results. He recently decided to try making Coir casings as described in the elementary Coir tek here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595/fpart/2/vc/1

The casings have stalled, maybe not enough spawn was used. However, there is all kinds of talk w. Monotubs about "don't crack the lid and look or it introduces fresh air and starts pinning and messes it all up" Well, with dung casings, my friend could open those things up anytime he wanted without any issues of any sort. Is something about Coir or Monotubs different that allows you not to be able to do that?? He even has holes poked in the foil covering his casings for FAE while colonizing.

Can someone help sort this out??  Thanks!

You shouldn't look @ colonizing Bulk by lifting the lid ever. Doesn't matter if you're using coir or manure.

You should have a few holes in tin foil if using that instead of a lid.

I just use my lid on my tub for GE.

Just spawn to bulk & let sit for 10-16 days. Once fulled colonized. Introduce to Fruiting Conditions.

You should be able to see through the side of the tub if it's fully colonized.

Also, you're speaking of bulk substrate not casing.

Yeah, all the casings he's ever made were w. those aluminum foil giant loaf pans, 1 quart of spawn to 2 loaf pans of straight manure. Colonization time always takes at least 7 days but never more than 10 unless something's wrong. It's been 7 days and he made some small casings out of tupperware that's see through and when looking through it doesn't seem like there has been much difference in growth over the last two days, they appear to be stalled for some reason.

Just give them time.

How was your moisture content?

here's one of my old tubs @ 1:1 using Damion5050's Tek After 10 days of colonization:

I know it's hard to see, but it's hard to take a picture through the side too.

The moisture content felt pretty much right on.  The first time he mixed it after dumping the hot water in and letting it sit, he thought wow this feels WAY too dry, but after letting it sit in the bucket for 2 hours it seems like all the steam that fell back in to the mix as well as mixing it up real good from the bottom, got it to where it needed to be. Not sure it was QUITE as wet as the manure he usually uses but it was pretty close. He only used 3 quarts of spawn for the brick as opposed to 5, maybe it's just going to take longer...

That's probably the reason. I wouldn't recommend less that 1:2 for coir.

Manure you can get away w/ a bit less.

Also, make sure to only use 1 gallon of water per brick of coir & 2 quart course verm.

The substrate always feels a bit on the "dry" side, but the mycelium will go through it quicker if it's on the dry side.

Aaahhh, well that makes sense then, the lack of spawn seemed to be the culprit but wasn't sure. Lesson learned, hehe!!
