Using o3 instead of o2 for growing?
    #14731165 - 07/07/11 01:17 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have an ozone generator/air purifier which produces o3 by ionization. Do you think it would be a benefit to the mycelium to keep this machine in the same room as them? Or would it harm them? I know humans absorb 03 a little better.

Basically, do they need o2 o3 or does it even matter.

Considering that ozone is used to kill mold...I don't think our fungi friends would enjoy it much. Not to mention that it is harmful for humans to breath.

well the machine is made for humans, im not saying it dosent harm but thats what the company that makes it says. they say a little helps but to omuch is bad. it also absorbs a little bit of blue light, which i think mushrooms need to grow right.

I know that it would have the effect of clearing particles
from the air around it.

...what this might mean to the growing fungus, I do not know.

That sounds like a very dangerous pseudoscientific machine! O3 is dangerous, I'd recommend not using that thing at all.

no one uses o2 for growing.

we use the air that comes through our windows.

and it has the perfect amount of o2 for your mushrooms.

you dont need more o2,

you need less co2

thank you, so what does less c02 do? prevent early pins?

what in the fuck are we talking about.

i was thinking that you were thinking about pumping in straight o2 into your fruiting chamber.

you dont want to do that.
a drop in co2 is a pinning trigger.
along with light, along with evaporation from substrate

03 is a powerful oxidizing agent, and as such, it's harmful to virtually all organisms.

What does the manufacturer suggest you do with it?  I know ozone can be used to purify water because it kills all the bacteria, protists, viruses, etc.  But I really doubt the manufacture intends for you to use it in the air you breath.  At least not long term.  Oxidative stress can cause DNA damage and cancer.

No they straight up tell you its made for air, its an air purifier and they say to use it forever pretty much and it will make you healthier, at least i got it for free.

They sent me all these dvds and stuff, wanting me to sell the product, and they explained that ozone and o3 are the same thing, and that the machine produces o3

Very funny, and, sadly, probably true.

One thing though.  I think that you are confusing negative
ion generators with ozone generators.

The former makes charged air particles, and cleans the air
by causing particles to clump together.  (I alluded to
this earlier).

You would not want to expose living things that you want to
thrive to an ozone generator. (O3 is highly reactive)

Take care,

JD

Yeah, thanks bro.

Best to set the record straight though.

The only negative thing about NIGs is the smut that sticks
to everything nearby it.  They do an amazing job of cleaning
the air though.

Take care,

JD
