I fail to see the advantage of this over casing the colonized  straw in a bin.

Except that it?s cool looking.

If you case the colonized straw in a bin you have one surface to fruit on out of six. (assuming you use a square bin) It takes 2 weeks to colonize the straw, then two weeks or so to colonize the casing. With logs, they're pinning in two weeks, and the flush is over in 3 to 3 1/2 weeks. Also, the full surface of the log fruits, even the very bottom where it's up against the shelf: the mushies just force their way out! This method will deliver AT LEAST twice the fruits of a casing, in half the time. Just follow the tek and don't add manure, compost, etc.

Better air exchange, and less contams maybe? Larger fruiting surface?

I think the Visions' basket will contam less since there won't be as much air exchange in the bag as with the basket.

I think closing up straw is a mistake. It needs to breathe.

Yes, but the one surface is packed with fruits at the time of the harvest.

>It takes 2 weeks to colonize the straw
Around 7- 10 days, yes.

> then two weeks or so to colonize the casing.
Only if you screw it up badly. 5 days at most.

> With logs, they're pinning in two weeks, and the flush is over in 3 to 3 1/2
This would be fast, yes.

>This method will deliver AT LEAST twice the fruits of a casing
I fail to see this on the pictures though.

Don?t get me wrong, please, I?m all for innovations and stuff, but it?s even better if the innovation is clearly better than what has been done before.

Well, I built 4 laundry baskets and thought they did pretty well. Then I started these logs, and the first log delivered more than all four baskets combined. If you scroll up and look at the pic of the log in this thread, I doubt you will see a flush that thick on the top of a casing. I know I haven't. That is a 48" log, 8" diameter, that produced 17 LBS wet, and the whole thing was finished and out of the grow room in 3 weeks from date of spawning. That size log uses roughly the same amount of straw used in a laundry basket, but at least 3 times the yeild, and in half the time. Didn't mist once from start to finish. I'm not trying to convince anyone....I just happened to see the thread and put my 2 cents worth in. Happy shrooming all.

I know one thing I like about the Visions' basket is that it can be dunked.

If this method isn't superior to bins, then why don't professional mushroom farms grow oysters in bins?

...and why does Roadkill think straw sucks?

Because oysters naturally grow on logs.

Do P. cubensis mushrooms grow on logs in nature? On cow-logs?

Also it's hard to fit a whole bale of straw in a bin, so scale of the operation is a factor.

Thickness of the substrate can be higher since all sides are surrounded by air.

Why, oh why does Roadkill think straw sucks? I haven't heard him answer this question yet, I guess that's why I'm asking you.

The visions' basket still gets my vote for best straw method, unless you need like ten pounds, in which case you could probably use larger baskets, and stack them.
