A few quick questions on mould
    #14729859 - 07/07/11 06:59 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hey shroomers,

Long-time member, second-time grower here.

I got a kit a few weeks back and the soldiers are starting to grow. However, there's a greenish mould growing on the top of the growing material. The shrooms are growing fine at the edges of the kit but aren't growing where the mould (?) is yet.

(Sorry about the shitty quality... I lent my good camera to a friend)

I've been keeping them in a wardrobe (amateur setup I know..) with radiator on next to it. I thought this would work okay but I must have been mistaken...

There also seems to be some discolouration on the shrooms themselves, but from my last time I think this is harmless:

Here's one more:

So... what do you guys think? I'll give it a few more days then let my instict decide what to do next. On the other hand, would it be safe to attempt to remove the mould? Would it be safe to cut out the fine areas and grow them elsewhere, or am I just clutching at straws?!

Anyway, I had lots more questions but will post as and when. Thanks for any help.

Jimmy

If its green you should toss it out.
Maybe its just bruised mycelium (blue).

Dont belittle contaminations. If it is trichoderma it can spread around your whole growing area.

Thanks for your reply. It's definitely more blue than green.

You're right: if it turns out to be baaad, then I'll just bin the lot. Time will tell I suppose.

Also, I've been keeping them in the dark pretty much constantly - is it wise to keep them in the light for a while?

It's not trichoderma (green mold). You let the mycelium dry out. Do you know that you are supposed to give at least some water to your mushrooms?
Furthermore there is an uncolonized spot in your tray.
What are your fruiting conditions?

The mycelium could be damaged by too much water/drying/rough handling.

You should provide enough humidity and fresh air exchange (FAE).
During the fruiting process you need a light source.

Hey guys thanks for your replies. You have put my mind at rest. They are now enjoying their new light-filled existence.

A few more questions however:

Is there any way to ensure the maximum possible area is colonized? Or, once the mycelium is bruised, is it a no-go?
