Hydrogen peroxide produces O, not O2...

I read. and randomly i see people talk about hydrogen peroxide.
yes it puts off oxygen. the element.
we call O2 oxygen for whatever reason. Living things (including myc) need O2, not O (O1) O is violent and bonds to "something" creating a random ass molecule, it takes that "something" from wherever it can, including a piece of the myc cells if thats what is around.
It can be useful. But im just suprised no one has mentioned that living things use O2. not "oxygen"
that is all

Correct! That is exactly how it works It causes rapid oxidation of anything it touches. It is bonded like two -OH bonds in a H-O-O-H fashion. This bond is highly unstable.

Yes and then that oxygen doesn't bind to something random, just another oxygen. Forming O2
2H2O2 -> 2H2O + O2

When sitting in a sealed bottle; then yes, that is true. The unstable bond breaks. The freed hydrogen rebonds with the OH- and the single oxygen molecule bonds with another freed oxygen molecule... However; that is NOT what is going on when "in use".

Chemistry is a bit foggy for me, but don't you need a catalyst, or some other oxide to break the bond, or as you say "in use"?

Naw, not that I'm aware of... H2O2 is used AS the catalyst for making various compounds when added to other compounds... Though there is "off gassing" that occurs when used. In an organic application, the released single oxygen molecule readily bonds with the organic tissue, causing the tissue to rapidly oxidize, killing that which it comes in contact with...
Example: great for initial cleaning of a wound, but not for keeping it clean, as it will keep killing off new cellular growth...
Don't know much more than that... Well, a tid bit more maybe

The important thing as far as this forum is concerned is peroxide works to kill cobweb mold. It also stunts the mycelium for a period, so only use it as a last resort. Any oxygen production is going to have negligible effect on our mushrooms at the fresh air exchange rates we use. RR

I only made the post because i saw locked threads talking about using it to clean / give myc oxygen - just wanted to point out that myc uses O2 and it is not produced consistently
