Does anyone here use food grade powdered gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate). If so, at what volume.

Same or slightly less volume. However, don't waste money on food grade unless there's no nursery nearby. RR

I've got lots of nurseries nearby, but every one of them is selling only pelletized gypsum, so I had to get mine from a home brew supply store. It was powdered and food grade and not too expensive if you're not (yet) growing on a commercial scale--a few bucks a pound.

Might I ask why it needs to be powdered? You can get a 38 pound bag of pelleted gardening gypsum for as cheap as 12 bucks....

Just call up the local farmer supply and ask if they carry them and you won't have to deal with shipping charges...

I don't know. Did I incorrectly assume powder was the better thing to use? Which is better & why? Pellets or powder?

Either one will work fine. The only reason I have food grade is because I was ordering from a mycology supply company, and they carried gypsum, so I ordered it not knowing it was food grade. I paid a bit more money for it and know know that I can get it up the street. I figured I would use this up first, and was just inquiring about volume.

Yeah there really isn't any difference only in that powdered is easier to use in that it mixes in the substrate easier

The powdered wants to clump. So I added it after I had field capacity. Even then it wanted to clump a bit, so I used a flour sifter to get it real fine.
One question for you guys; How do you sterilize your poly fill?

I don't its not something that contams are really prone to grow on but if I did I'd stick it in quart jars and PC it for 20-30 minutes
I've always used pelletized gypsum which I dissolve and and to the rehydration water of the horse manure/coir

it doesnt.
your GE filter gets sterilized when you PC it.
and a fruiting chamber has not one single part that is sterile. so no point in trying to make a sterile fruiting chamber.
its not needed

If you add just the right amount of water to the coir, then mix the gypsum it doesn't clump.
The solution to your clumping problems is laid out in this video Tek... The gypsum step is in part II.

I'm reusing polly from a contaminated tub.
I just finished PCing spawn bags filled with polly. They came out fine.

oh im sure the polyfil came out fine.
but it would have been just as good if you had not PCd it
dirty polyfil is NOT the source of contamination of your tubs. period.
how over clean you want to be is cool and all.
but you can use polyfil with some trich spores in it.
there are trich spores floating all around your room right now.
your fruiting mushies dont mind. thats nature.

QFT.
When you see green it is because or you, the spawn, or improper pasteurization.
I use new polyfil every time though. It is good to keep a clean environment.

Mine gets slimy and dirty by the 3rd flush bro, and I use a shit load of it. I really don't like to reuse it. It is kinda dirty, I just toss it and get new polyfil. It only costs 20 bucks per run.... 20 bucks isn't that big of a deal,
