food runner
    #14724789 - 07/06/11 11:17 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Has anyone been one before? I had my first night as this busy restaurant last night and it was just intense watching the two guys training me. All the servers, including the manager, told me how hard the job was going to be and I see what they're talking about now.

This is my second job on the side.. my other one is an apprenticeship and I don't get paid for it. I'm trying to convince myself I'll become decent at this

You will. Soon you will laugh at the you that would be worried about 3 orders, while you're handling 10 orders and mackin' on the waitress bitch.

That's my experience with the food biz. :super:

Yeah just figure out the system and you will be fine.

More importantly, find the people who don't get stressed when it gets busy and try to learn from and stick with them.

There will always be people there that will get stressed out, and they just make it worse for themselves and those around them.

The peeps that can keep their cool under fire are where its at.

Don't get frustrated if you screw up.  That's the only way you learn.  As long as you take the learning from the mistakes you'll be all good.

Just try not to make the same mistakes twice.

The trick is to not lose your cool. If you drop something or shit goes wrong, shrug it. After a few weeks you'll have the routine down pat and it will be a breeze.

it's an easy job, just keep that in your head, it's easy

as everyone else said... dont panic. doesnt matter how busy it gets or how
much pressure you think you're under, you're not because the job is easy.
fuck ups are easy to fix, just relax and stay on top of your game

lol. most jobs seem super hard once you start. Then after a week, you realize that its not as hard as you thought, after 3 weeks, you realize that the job is easy and boring.

After week 5, you want to quit every day you come, and yet you work there for 10 years

I must be borked then, none of them seem hard or confusing or stressful to me

I always repeat to myself "I love my fucking job, my job loves fucking me"

it works, the whole days runs smooth

Some people enjoy what they do for a very long time. I just dont think I have it in me to do that. Unless of course its because I haven't found my perfect line of work yet. Which for some reason I doubt I will find.

I really need to start think positively about it though.

that's what it's all about, if you let a comment or some crap get to you the
job is miserable, stressful and the day drags on. most people dwell on the
shit for hours or even days. I see no point in other people dragging me down
because they cant deal with their jobs in a positive manner. one of the
reasons I was always a top earner when serving was because of my attitude,
manager chewed my ass on the floor in front of customers and other employees
over substitutions, bad move on the managers part and the first table I hit
after that they asked why I wasnt pissed off about it. it's simple, I'm
responsible for the customer's satisfaction, if the customer cant get what
they want then they wont like the place and wont return, if the manager has
an issue with that he needs to tell the customer and not relay it through me
or he just needs to shut the doors for good

if the ingredients to make something is in the restaurant and the thing
they want isnt on the menu, I'll make sure they get it regardless even if
I have to cook it myself... it's one of the reasons I wont work for chains
like applebee's, suppose a customer wants those baby back ribs without the
sauce, since they're pre-packaged, heat and eat shit, it's not happening
and I hate telling a customer they cant have what they want more than I
love telling a manager to fuck off

positive attitude = can do = happy customers = big tips
