FAE: Bringing outside air into a completely closed basement?
    #14723040 - 07/05/11 10:26 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have a friend that is growing mushrooms in his basement.
His basement is about 400 square feet.

He has ultrasonic humidifiers, as well as lights serving grow bins on shelving units.

The question is, Can he just blow the air around the room to accomplish FAE for the shrooms, or should he be piping in fresh air from outside the house?

Just wondering if the stale air from the relatively sealed in basement will suffice for FAE around the bins.

I like the way you think but you're gonna have to worry about keeping the room's RH >90%.  Which is of course possible but you'll have to line the walls with plastic due to mildew.

But yeah I think it'd be a good idea to bring in air from the outside.  After all you're trying to replicate the outdoors and nothing does that like the outdoors.

I would think, albeit in ignorance, that one would want to at least "prefilter" the incoming air and then force it through humidification before entering the room... An air outlet of some sort would be wanted as well, I'm thinking...  Just for starters to add to the previous posts

If its fresh enough when you breathe it then its fine, just run a fan to circulate the air

Thanks.

I shall follow this idea for now....simply because it's simple.
However, I do appreciate the other two ideas too.

Shall eventually go that route when I tear down the set up, and do the next clean up. At that time I shall install a inlet for a bathroom fan type inlet and run it though a air filter ...something like a furnace filter..as well as making another port at the opposite end of the basement for an exhaust port.

I am going to advice my friend soon to tear down everything and redo the walls and ceiling with plastic due to him having do deal with an excessive degree of contamination in his open grow bins.

I am coming to the belief that every so often its good do a complete tear down, remove grow bins,  get a good mister and disinfect the grow room.

If any repainting is done (dont know how the walls are constructed), use paint impregnated with silver  Will help much with mold concerns.

Its actually a really old basement, probably from the early 1930's so the best is just to cover them with plastic and hope for the best.

The floor is even wet most of the time from water seeping in from the cracks in the walls and floors.

Its one of those houses where the ceiling is not even 6' high.

But I am surprise, its working pretty good and the majority of the flushes are quite good. Only thing is that during most second flushes the bins start to show contamination.
