    #14722180 - 07/05/11 07:25 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I've been researching all the mushrooms that grow here in Florida, and this guy brought a bag full of these out. I've had a few people say they were good, a few others said no. So im hoping someone here can help.

Cholorphyllum sp., C. molybdites is quite likely due to location.

Don't buy or eat them.

Try hitting up some cow pastures man. Look for psilocybe cubensis & Panaeolus cyanescens.

Seeing as these mushrooms quite clearly are not in a bag, I am assuming these are photos of ones you believe to be the same as the ones you were offered for sale?

People can't really ID a mushroom from a photo that you believe to be the same, we need an actuall photo of the mushrooms you were offered/brought.

Having said all that I would agree that the photo you have posted is of a Cholorphyllum sp.

I am curious as to how they are definately C. molybdites with no gill shots or spore prints?

Is this just due to location or is there another defining feature that I have missed?

One sec, buddy. You say that your man brought a bag of these out and then you show us a photo in a patch of grass. N00bs are notoriously rubbish at telling if two mushrooms are the same species, no offence. I suggest you show us the mushrooms he ACTUALLY tried to sell you.

He says he knows people that have bought them. Or he could just buy the smallest amount possible to take a photo.

He sent me a picture before we met up, when he got here he pulled these out in a bag. They're the same ones, I have a picture of the bag also, it just wasn't as clear of a pic as the ones he sent of them growing.

C. molybdites is a weed in southern states, and he is in Florida.  It can be found in HUGE fairy rings in grass, out of disturbed soil, in wood chips, pretty much anywhere, but it looooves to grow in grass, especially fields or pastures.  The colour of the pileus and the scales give away that it is definitely a Chlorophyllum, the arrangement of the scales, and growing on grass in the South strongly suggest C. molybdites.

I am by no means even an amateur, more of a wannabe at this point but I've had a recent experience with a mushroom like this.  If that staining on the gills is greenish it is C. molybdites and is poisonous.  Put it down on some paper for a few minutes and if you see green, you'll know.

Once my similar mushroom started looking like that it stained green very easily with spores I'm assuming.  Spore print on mine was sickly green like this.

I don't believe that what he tried to sell was the same ones as you've found.

No offence.

Thanks CureCat.  They are a lot less common here, I figured that might be the case though.
