Rye jars didn't inoculate, can I reuse?
    #14720856 - 07/05/11 02:35 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I noc'd up somertye quarts and they did not take.  I want to try again.  The rye in the jar looks as good as it did on day one (2 weeks ago), can I just re-inoculate the same jar with new/different spores?

Sure can. Moisture content takes about 3-4 weeks to become off in sealed jars.

Sure you can, but I would at the same time be prepping new grain.  I wouldn't bet the farm
on those jars doing well.  If they fail at least you have fresh jars colonizing.  If you don't have enough spore solution to prep new jars as well, then dump them.

I tried this once and a few worked out ok, but some didn't. I think it may have to do
with the type of GE holes I had in my jar. 1/4" with one layer of tyvek, was letting my jars
dry quickly. Plus I have a window AC unit that dries the air out. Since I switched to SFD's
I have had no problems with drying.

Carl - yea, it was your GE filter that allowed too much moisture to escape. I've let jars sit for 3 weeks w/out a noticeable difference vs. fresh jars.

OP - If you're inoculating again, just remember that you can't label the spores (if taking prints) as a particular strain.
