what group... a dozen people could do it in just a few hours
It's just the fact that who would go through all that trouble just for a joke? and on the ground it looks like nothing at all, you couldn't see the message unless you were hovering above it....
Also I thought I would quote the OP on something to further clarify my opinion.

DeadHearts said: It seems impossible that people could have made such large and complex formations so perfectly in the dark of one night. On top of that, scientific analysis of the crops showed that they had not been pushed down with blunt force as you would expect in a man-made design. Rather, the bottom nodes of the stalks had been heated via some form of focused radiation so that they wilted over and strangely, came to rest at a 90 degree angle.

Lots of people. Especially people in the anglo-sphere, on the weekends mostly.

The first crop circles were recorded in the Middle Ages. Back then they thought it was the devil making them.
This website has been recording them for the past 15 years or so: http://www.cropcircleconnector.com/2011/2011.html
They vary in complexity. What amazes me is the mathematical precision and the "language" of the circles. Some circles are discovered within very short periods of time - such as overnight. The crops themselves seem to be subjected to a form of microwave radiation which explodes the nodes.
Definitely some interesting stuff. Some are man-made, others who knows.
Here's a very interesting documentary if your interested in the subject:

"Certain evidence, such as the Mowing-Devil, suggest the appearance of crop circles before the 20th century. Nevertheless, there are important differences between that story and modern crop circles. The story of the mowing devil involves the cutting of the crops following a dispute over crop harvesting and an invocation of the devil, no geometric patterns were reported."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_circle
Most cases started occuring in the 1970's.

I believe these 'signs' are very true.
Sure, I could believe something that a few idiots did overnight (brilliant idiots).
The only way to introduce a planet that has never met any extra terrestrial lifeform without causing mass hysteria is to leave messages like this.
If I were the aliens, the next step I would take to communicate and prove that it is not a hoax would be to do a crop picture written in binary of a mathematical equation that has not been solved by humans yet.
The media would go crazy about it, it would be on every news station around the world, and yet people would not panic because A) not everybody understand mathematics to the point of realising the magnitude of an solved formula and B) Nobody would have actually seen the alien in question.
Then followed by many other patches similar to the ones in the video. Just enough to make people think, wow that cannot be a hoax. (like 1000 patches spead out around the world forming a coherent story.)
Then if the media still make it a hoax. I would print 10000 field. Eventually, it will be too big to be considered man made

Like I said, this seems like an ineffecient way of establishing contact, some of these have to be legit though(could be fooling myself).

Yea... I agree the idea of ETs does not mesh well with most peoples belief systems. A lot of people would definitely freak out. Although the Pope has already acknowledged the possible existence of ETs. heh

Maybe for them it's the only way of establishing contact... Pictures are a universal language. If they landed here, what would they say? I highly doubt we would understand them or they would understand us. On the other hand, we understand these pictures almost perfectly and have even decoded the message they sent us which is mind blowing.

Well think about it. Technology changes everyday, objectives change every year, government changes every 4 years, ideology changes every 10 years and regime (monarchy to democracy) changes every few hundred years.
Meeting aliens? that takes thousands of years of prep work. They cant just drop out of the sky. They have to give small signs, here and there, that resembles what could be human made but causes suspicion. Just enough so we notice that its unusual.

hijacking TV and the Internet to show undeniable proof of aliens existence would be too rapid (if that is what you meant)

I did think about. Its bollocks. If your claim is true, then the only species and civilizations that could make contact without mass hysteria are the ones that grow grain style crops.

I would like to see something close encounters style, ship lands and plays music. Thats way sagan included music with his disk, he thought music was universal.

some of those crop circles are pretty incredible enough to convince me of something incredible but I'm still really not quite sure what. I try not to assume too much that I can't know for sure, that way I'm not surprised either way
I will watch that documentary later on, thanks

conspiracies dont have to involve the government, private citizens can also conspire, for instance a bunch of bored kids getting together to create crop circles in some farmers wheat
Half the threads in the Pub can be labled "about conspiracy" if you have to go that far afield to apply word.

That, projections in the sky, world wide audible sound, I do not believe it to be too rapid. What do you folks think would happen with sudden contact?
