Did JRR. Tolkien do Drugs, Lord of the Rings

I was just wondering since Middle-earth etc are too imaginative for anyone to make up without mental issues or Drugs. Lord of the ring was vivid, trippy and very goose pumping
Do you think he did drugs when he was younger since drugs were probably seen as cigrettes instead of dangerous subtances. Lsd Maybe?

LSD did not exist when he was younger
Never heard he did any drugs, no. Being a respected English professor at that time, I doubt it.

I thought he smoked Opium or something, possibly weed, which is where whatever the 'pipeweed' or whatever Gandolf smokes comes from, but I'm not sure

it's not like drugs pop imagination and creativity out of everyone.
sure, it improves your performances, but one's starting intelligence/skill is what really matters.
for example the average joe could never reach the best undoped athletes no matter how he strives and dopes.

I would say he'd done his share of drugs, most well educated (especially artistic) people do.
For instance think of Gandalf: He fell down the rabbit hole (fell into shadow), battled with the fear (the balrog) and then became enlightened (Gandalf the white). This sounds like a good metaphor for tripping to me. Or what about Tom Bombadil?
At very least Tolkin was into some deep philosophical stuff.

I read his biography a few years ago, and there was no mention of drugs. He did smoke a pipe, which was probably filled with tobacco though, iirc. I don't remember opium or weed being mentioned.
Tolkien was just a remarkable man. His only downfall was that he had trouble finishing his projects and he often took on too much work, as well as being ordered by his superiors at the colleges he worked at to take on other projects, thus halting his writing and pushing him back even further on his books. He was also a perfectionist, which is very difficult to be when you're writing entire epic stories based on an entire world that you created.
If he sat down and only worked on the LOTR series like today's writers do with their stories, I can't even imagine how much more awesome it would be.

I think I read that he was even quite annoyed by the LOTR adoption by the hippies and their "drug related" vision of his book.

Tolkien is laughing at us right now because id bet he used alcohol tobacco weed and possibly opium. The depiction of pipe weed and the entire 2 pages dedicated to it is too direct for him not to have enjoyed to herb.

Which totally proves everything, giving the deep and philosophical posts by the enlightened tripper kids I keep reading here in PE on a daily basis</sarcasm> Now, I am not saying that he didn't indulge in mindaltering substances as it was rather common and socially not ostracized at the time he lived, but believe it or not, there actually are people that have a 3 figure IQ without having to die the ego death, be one with the universe and then come back posting "I JUST ATE 3g of CUBES OMGOMG EGO DEATH!" thinking they now understand how the Universe functions. They's is called smart peoples.

Johnny Depp said: I'll bet you the people who worked on the visual effects and computer effects and directing and computer digital editors etc, had a good idea of what looks trippy, and surely some of the effects in the LOTR movies were using ideas and visual tricks that were inspired by the way psychedelic drugs work.
At least I think they've found a way to tap into the same part of the brain that is effected by psychedelic drugs.
If you read JRR Tolkien's work though, it comes across very,,,professor-ish. And English, and early 20th century. I think the guy just had a vivid imagination. But he borrowed basically all the main ideas from history and mythology, and language....he really nerd-ed out on the languages. He had to change some of the names of things in LOTR because the real Rohan language, Hobbit language, etc is too strange sounding for the books.
You kids are projecting too much. "Wow, psychedelics are so AWESOME! See this guy! He just had an awesome idea! I bet it was inspired by LSD!". Stop fucking projecting. If you love drugs, by all means, do them, but stop attributing everything awesome to drugs. Most of you are way to obsessed with them.

Well said bro, and i totally agree with kids saying 'Drugs are Awesome!'
Tolkien was very imaginative indeed though he might have taken Opium since that was popular during the early 18,19 and 20 century but everything is uncertain. he didn't use weed cause pipe-weed is completely different, its more assoicated with tabacco really not much weed Some people are born imaginative while others have to find it
Thanks everyone!

Actually that comes through if you read just the back cover, which explains that he was a professor of English (in England) in the 1930's.
Unlikely in the extreme that he used opium recreationally. Slightly possible he used opium or hashhish under advice from a doctor.

Wikipedia: The word pipe-weed first appears in the Prologue to The Lord of the Rings in the section called "Concerning Pipe-weed". Tolkien says the Hobbits of old "imbibed or inhaled through pipes of clay or wood, the smoke of the burning leaves of an herb, which they called pipe-weed or leaf, a variety probably of Nicotiana." In the same paragraph, Tolkien as narrator refers to "the tobacco of the Southfarthing."
Tobacco is indeed a very powerful substance, whose qualities have been trivialized by our society.
No need to see the Hobbits as little stoners cultivating their "Hobbiton Sweet Buds" or "Took's Hairy Furry Feet"

Johnny Depp said: do you honestly believe none of the people who worked on the visual effects of LOTR movies were inspired by or used effects that were inspired by psychedelics in any way?
Of course at least some of them were. Nearly any group of people, any community and any workplace has at least 1 psychedelic user. They're just not forward/open about it (for good reason).
And you don't have to actually take psychedelic drugs to be inspired by psychedelics. Just looking at/experiencing art created by psychedelic users is enough to "inspired by psychedelics" in a second hand fashion.
I actually think that rather than mind being inspired by psychedelics, psychedelics are inspired by mind. Therefore EVERYTHING created is inspired by psychedelia, whether you're a tripper or not.
