cheers mr squee, but that is sphagnum moss, not sphagnum peat moss. alot of the casing mixtures on here include shpagnum peat moss. It is difficult to find these days without it being mixed in with compost. And infact 90% of composts all say peat free on the label. Ive asked at garden centers and they say they are phasing it out due to environment issues. they said they could order it in especially, but i didn't want it that bad. do you have good results with the shpagnum moss then?

Haha  thought they were the same thing!  Looking at this it would seem the difference you're talking about is just the level of growth that's harvested.  I'm new to growing and have my first lot of sub I plan to case colonizing as we speak.  I've got a bag of that stuff so I will prob give it a go in a 50/50 mix and see what happens.

Its from the same plant as the sphagnum peat moss and is very absorbent so hopefully it'll do the job too!  Sorry for the bum steer... :rocket:

Yes, polyprop can be sterilised but be warned some sellers might not know the difference between polyprop and polystyrene.

You dont need to PC them. They come sterile. You sterilize your agar and pour it into the dishes 8in a glovebox or infront of a flow hood) whilst still warm, before its set.

Most plastic petri's are polystyrene and so cant be pressure cooked for reuse

Peat moss is still easy to find in smaller garden centres, like family run ones. All the big chain stores stopped carrying it as far as I can tell.

It's worth checking any small local shops, 100ltr bag will last you pretty much forever, I've had one for about 3 years now, still more than half full.

I was more thinking about reusing them to be honest - I am a tightwad!

Unfortunatly there not really reuseable in terms of making agar plates with them again.

You could use them for storing beads though :p

You can get 500 petri dishes for around £40. That's 8p each!

good find lousyhero  one of those bags may be purchased in the future.. the shamrock peat that is

mr squee, let me know how ure casing turns out with that sphagnum,, I ow a bag of it 2 but hgavent used any yet  lol

those 3 compartment petris are seriously hard to come by,, eva ebay or u can buy 500 from www.ukge.org ; ... they will set you back about 100 pounds when uve added vat and delivery ...gulp

ps has any1 ever tried roofing felt for a lid filter? I was working on a roof today and we took up shit loads of the old 1.  Its web uv15 roofing felt. its eva blue or black on  the top side and white underneath. it is water proof and breathable to allow air circulation in the roof but not allow water through.

i have no idea what its filtering properties are like im guessing pretty high. just not sure if enough air exchange would take place or weather its p.c able.

might do a test jar. 1 sqaure meter of this  would keep you going along time ,, if it is any good.

Those bags of Shamrock Peat seem to be 125 litres! That's a lot of moss unless its a typo and is meant to be 12.5l.  Cheers for the link on those 3-way petris, not sure I want my ebay feedback to scream 'Mycology!'...

No idea on the felt thing, I've only used tyvek and micropore. Test jar sounds like a good idea.

I was looking through ebay the other day for tyvek and noticed there was tyvek roofing felt being sold. Perhaps that's what you've been using?

Just checked the link again and it does say there made from Polyproplyene which can be pressure cooked usually.

£5 for 20 is a joke though, get 500!

hahaha yeah thats the stuff, It is very durable and thick, i have a tyveck overall but it is so flimsy, this roofing felt seems much more substantial. think i might swoop up sum of this tommorow

that ebay offer is 55 pounds for 75 square metres XD that would last a year or 2 :P XD hahahahahahaha

ps. if you were a nutter you could smash a hole in your drywall/plasterboard ceiling to make some free gypsum and then make your way on  your rampage upto the rood space and start tearing off huge chunks of roofing felt XD

if your a little more refined maybe just take of a slither where it overlaps  but still put a hole in your roof :P

I messaged the seller to check if they're definitely polypropylene rather than polystyrene.  Am keen to get the 3-sector petris for starting out on agar so I can follow RRs video tek.  Unfortunately UKGE seem to be out of stock...

just for thoes that dont know spagnum peat moss is a misleading term spagnum is the grean planty stuff that grows on the surface of bogs/moors peat moss is where the spagnu and other plants start to decay and is deaper in the soil. peat is then deaper again and is whate peat brekets are maid form if you can get your hands on turf id recomend using it just sook for a good while and use this is where the where the plants have lost most of the nutreants (i use this) peat moss is avalable in most garden centers get the cheapest stuff you can find as this will have the least aded firtiliser i got a 80 liter bag for about E4 £3.50
hope this helps
