Why are the first flush fruits small?
    #14715388 - 07/04/11 12:00 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My cousin's nephew is having his first flush of Equadors. There a ton of pins everywhere, but the bodies themselves are a bit small (2 inches at best) and some are already breaking from their caps, or veil is breaking, what have you. What would cause this? He thought this strain was a large fruiter. Consitions are good, 99% humidity, 70F constant, natural sunlight about 6 hours daily (shaded). Any takers?

Pics. Could be lack of water in the substrate. Or even genetics. Also:

Could be too much water, could me too little, could be genetics. Also I'd try lighting with a 6500k bulb: 12 on 12 off.

What your substrate look like? Is it pulling away from the sides of the container? Is it blue? Are the caps of your fruits slimy in appearance?

A good sample from one of my previous grows, same strain. The silver piece is a dime for size comparison.

I discoverd 2 things that cause small fruits:
1. Amount of Substrate and/or nutritients in the substrate. Small cases with a small substrate height will cause small fruits.

2. Type of Substrate. I can clearly say, that for ME brown rice substrate+Coco Bulk result in smaller fruits.

Substrate depth is a valid point, however it usually has less to do with the depth and more to do with say a 2" substrate losing too much moisture during coonization. Sourmilk giant shrooms can be grown using brown rice spawned to coir. So please disregard that. Brown rice is very nutritious, that is why the pf tek uses brown rice flour.

Small substrate = small fruit seems his most likely problem. The cakes were 'nocd in regular mouth 1/2 pints and are very small. Let me dig up some pics...

See how these little guys are already breaking away from the stems? And at only a couple inches... what's that about. Otherwise they look healthy. Maybe he's being impatient.... my cousin's nephew that is.

(sorry about the flip, this is my double stack)

Nothing wrong with those cakes. Maybe give them more FAE. I see some skinny stems there. They will keep growing, don't worry. But if you want huge fruits, you have to go bulk.

Fresh air exchange. Do you use a shotgun fruiting chamber?

Well a story about that. A hole was drilled into the bottom side just above the perlite layer at first, because O2 rises, this was the best area for it. A small aquarium air pump hose was then put into the hole to push in fresh O2 with small holes on the lid for air to escape. This setup has since been ditched because no to slow pinning was taking place. So back to good old fashion daily fanning. Ever since then, they popped up within 3 days.

Ok but do you have holes in your FC? If not, drill holes on all six sides. Then keep misting and fanning (at least three times a day). It seems to me that you have great genetics but poor fruiting conditions.

Build shotgun FC per tek.
Get rid of all your electric parts.
Get rid of any standing water.
Holes on all six sides every 2 inches.
Mist and fan.
Perfect conditions.

Small fruits often occur because you're using PF tek cakes.
If you want large fruits, you need to go the bulk route.
Good starting point is a write-up I just completed in my sig.
GL OP...or his nephew, cousin, aunt, whatever
