Inoculation help
    #14715139 - 07/04/11 11:03 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I'm new to Shroomery and have bought RR's video and spent countless hours in here absorbing everyone's techniques. Amazing resource Shroomery is, I hope to one day contribute to the knowledge base in here.

Just started my first PF Tek batch.  That being said, I'm still unsure about a few things. Please don't beat up for not reading, because I have read a lot and it seems like there are differing schools of thought on inoculation and gas exchange.

I pull by BRF  Verm 1/2 pint mason jars out of the pressure cooker, take the alum foil off, just leaving the masking tape over the four holes.

My question is, once I inject the jars, do I leave the tape on or take it off? I've seen posts where people are using everything from micropore, tyvek, silicone, and nothing at all. No trend seems to emerge as the proper method. Some say leave it open, other's say that's plain crazy. Please help!

Then, there is this "how to" post on shroomery http://www.shroomery.org/11402/Fast-easy-fool-proof-inoculation ) that gives a taste of a new method, but doesn't go into detail about how he's actually inoculating. Has anyone tried this method, using the alcohol-soaked sponge?

Last, some say store initial jars in some sunlight, some say total darkness, and round it goes. How much sun are you exposing your newly-inoculated jars to?

Take off the foil & tape. The dry verm layer is your contam barrier.

Flame sterilize the needle between each jar.

Use a 1/4cc per inoculation point.

we call those "how to"s "teks"

I always keep my jars on a 12/12 schedule w/ a 6500K light bulb.

I'm pretty new myself and can totally understand how you feel.  There's a lot of info out there and a lot of slightly different ways to do the same thing.

I've had successful inoculations by just injecting through the tape over the holes, through the dry verm layer and also had success not using any tape and just relying on the verm layer as a contam filter.  The last lot of cakes I nocc'ed up I improvised and dispensed with the verm layer and used alcohol soaked micropore over my holes to keep the contams out.  Don't know if any of these ways is 'best'...

If you just choose your tek and follow it for your first grow you will probably succeed - if you have RR's videos then follow that tek.  The dry verm layer is a good contam barrier in my experience so all you need to do is make sure you don't introduce contams with your syringe.  Flame the shit out of it till its red hot and it will be clean!

However, if you want exact directions look to RRs tek and just do what he does. Don't try and do a 'perfect grow' by trying to mix all the teks (which is what I tried to do on my first grow ) - just pick a solid one and follow that.

If you got a PC then i'd suggest you buy some rye berries and do the rye tek. I prep cakes by just leaving the holes open and i just put alum foil over the tops and sterilize. When i go to inoc i remove the foil, wipe the jar down with iso, put in a glovebox pre-wiped with iso and inoc thru just the open holes and then put fresh/dry micropore tape over em just for safety. Make sure you stick the needle below the dry verm layer when inoc'n or you will wet it, highering the chances of contam. You dont even have to put micropore tape over the holes but i just do it for safety since if the dry verm layer gets disturbed things might get down in there.

The RR video, despite being 4 hours and $50, leaves an incomplete picture. For example, in the entire two-DVD series he does not mention once about misting or fanning, how often I should do this, what amount of misting, how long do I fan, and even about specific temp/sunlight issues with the fruiting chamber.

Also, in the video it looks like he's putting his cakes, post-birthing, on top of aluminum foil sheets above the perlite layer in his FC, but strangely he does not even bring this up so I have to assume that it's even aluminum foil (the image is not a closeup so it could be wax paper or any number of other items).

Amazingly, he doesn't have a single minute dedicated to harvesting them either. He doesn't give an idea at all about the optimal harvest technique, what a shroom looks like that's ready to pull from the FC, when to pull them out, what to look for, or how to dry them. Seems like in four hours that should have come up.

He's obviously an expert and I'm grateful for what he's given me, but it's not complete, even after watching several times.

I bought the verm and brown rice flour and did two cups of verm, one cup of water, mixed them and then added one cup of BRF and the result was something so clumpy and sticky it didn't fall nicely into the mason jar like in the video. It was like silly putty, so I had to mush it down a bit, which he says not to do. I added a bit more water and that didn't work either, just made it soupy.

Even within the vermiculite advocates community, there is considerable debate about the optimal size of the verm kernels and the grain size of the brown rice flour. Judging by the poor consistency of my first batch, I'm not quite there yet, and the video doesn't really give a picture about what the optimal grain size is for the verm or the brf, hence my requests for info in here.

I'm here to learn, and eventually pass on the knowledge to future noobs, so I genuinely appreciate Shroomery for filling in the gaps for me.

mist & fan as your SGFC dictates. You're just replacing the moisture in the perlite & fan after. Normally it's 2-3 times per day.

Put it on foil or a jar lid in the SGFC, you don't want to set your cakes directly on the perlite.

You can cut them @ the base (closest to the substrate as possible) or twist & pull the mushis out. You pick right before the veil tears.

dry in a dehydrator until cracker dry.

use course (large) or medium grade verm.

RR can't show you how to fully cultivate ps. c. in his videos.

Was me actually  I understand the gaps in the info you're talking about - perhaps a more detailed tek would be better for you.

I think this one is very good, very similar to RRs in the video but with a little more detail on inoculation etc.
