Someone told me that cubensis derives some energy form the photosynthesis of melanin. Is this true or complete BS?

No. Only plants, cyanobacteria and a few Protista like the various types of kelp do photosynthesis. Fungi by definition are consumers and the eat by absorption (so says my biology class), they use the light to know which way to fruit and light is also beneficial as a fruiting trigger. You can make them fruit upside down by shining the light from the bottom, looks crazy.
Also melanin is the skin pigment that makes you tan. It is not even remotely related to photosynthesis

Thank you for clearing that up King Cap.
Do you know if light during fruiting leads to more and bigger fruits? The guy who claimed that mushrooms do photosynthesis also claimed that.

My first grow I only used my normal room lights (at first) and had TERRIBLE results. I got a flexible lamb from home depot that came with a 6500k bulb for $18 and immediately noticed a huge improvement 2nd and 3rd flushes had about 5 times the total yield compared to the 1st (which did not have the 6500k bulb).
Light is crucial

Cubensis uses light for something, though it is not photsynthesis. But you'll get bigger, better, more abundant fruits under sunlight than using less or no light. Consider human production of Vitamin D if you need an analogy- we aren't using the sunlight for energy, but we have to have it to be healthy.

Good analogy.
