Taping after injecting
    #14712256 - 07/03/11 06:35 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I was just wondering if after i inject the jars with spores, do I tape over the tape i just poked with the needle? Also do I just leave the jars covered with that tape or do I cover them with anything else? What will happen if i leave the tape on? I am worried that if i don't leave the tape on it will get contaminated with something.

well its like this.
Mycellia breathes. If you put tape over it, unless there is another place where gas exchange can take place, you will be blocking off its gas flow. If you're using pftek im less familiar with how that works, but with WBS tek, you can use tyvek for a first layer so that its breathable but contams cant easily get through, then put your lid on with its small injection hole; after you inject, there will be a small hole in the tyvek, most people use 2 layers of alcohol swabbed coffee filter and put it over the top, holding it in place with a rubber band or duct tape if you dont have that. (I would reccomend rubber bands)

Oh sorry, I am using PF tek with brown rice flour and vermiculite. I have medical tape that I was planning on using for taping the holes.

I dunno, I guess my suggestion would be to consult the tek you're using or search up the newest PFtek and see how they proceed, if they use tape, you're good to use tape. If not, you'll need to think of something else. I remember years ago my friend did a round of Pftek and I don't recall seeing coffee filters on them. I think the verm layer is supposed to be a buffer between contaminates and your mycellia. not 100% sure though. it's been a while.

Ok, well thanks anyway. I have heard and the pf tek does say that the verm. is the barrier but there are so many conflicting opinions. I am doing 10 cakes so i think i will do 5 with and 5 without. thanks for your help, any help is good help.

the verm barrier is enough , no tape needed for the pf tek

coffee filters are overkill
