Drying/Storing Question

I was just wondering if drying just by air dry/putting infront of computer fan/ under refrigerator is a sufficient way of drying them? Its taken them about a week to dry completely this way. Also I left them in a jar with 3 silica gel packets and put it in my closet. If mold is to form would it have formed during the drying process, or does it become moldy if not dried properly and not stored right? (not that any of them are moldy, just curious.)

I used to dry them in a grill with a fan pointing at them on low... Never had any problems... Now i use desiccant, it's just faster but it works as great

Thats what I read and did for the first 12 hours or so then set them under the fridge with a paper towel under them (nice and warm but not too hot..I hope) Must not have been THAT hot since it took em so damn long. Does handling them a bit too much (not rough with them or anything, just moving them around from various drying locations to test out drying methods) affect potency much? Am I asking too many stupid questions?

Mold will not form during the drying process. If they are drying they should be fine. Mold will occur faster when they still have some moisture and in a sealed container, so don't put them in a ziplock/storage unless they are completely dry. Fan drying can get them cracker dry.. it depends on your environment. If you live in a humid environment then fan drying will only take them so far, they will never get completely bone dry.
The method I use for drying is to stick them in front of a fan for 2-3 days, until about 90-95% dry Then into an airtight sealed container with desiccant (calcium chloride) for another 2-3 days until completely cracker dry. The desiccant is good for sucking ALL the moisture out. But I don't use it for the whole process. If you dry the shrooms completely with just desiccant, it will work but that desiccant will become saturated with water 10x faster then if you fan dry first. Get most of the water out, then let the desiccant finish the remaining 5-10% off.
Drying this way, into airtight ziplock bags and then into a mason jar with a little desiccant pack, they will stay good for years. Do not store them long term in the freezer/fridge unless you are sure they are cracker dry. The stems should snap easily, not bend
Of course a dehydrator is just as efficient if not easier/less maintenance.

As far as I know heat can break down psylocibin.... But how hot I have no idea... Some people dry them in the oven on a cookie sheet and low setting so under your fridge should be ok.

Thanks a lot One more question.. I've been looking through threads and some recommend putting them in the freezer. Will this help preserve psilocybin better/longer as opposed to in my closet?

If they are cracker dry, they will stay good for years in the freezer. Just make sure they are in an airtight container.

Thanks again. All these mushrooms I collected in a cow field. Besides the obvious wash-with-water technique is there anything else I should do to them or worry about? I remember a long while back before I decided to try them a friend told me maggots and stuff like to live in the stems(?) he might have been confused with something totally different like stem blueing. Anyway any things I should consider when picking from a cow pasture, and if I'm really paranoid is there any way of preparing them which may kill off any bacteria or anything before ingestion?
