Video format issues and conversion

Note-Did the obligatory search first and could not find any helpful info.
OK, so I got a new camera. It can shoot HD video. But the camera records in .mov format. For some reason, when I transfer the files to my computer I can't get the .mov files to play properly. VLC plays the audio fine but the picture is choppy. Quicktime plays the video but the colors are wrong (everything has a blue hue to it). Personally I don't even like working with .mov format anyway. I would like to find a free application that will convert the files to another format for me to work with them.
I know there is nothing wrong with the files themselves. They play fine on the camera. And I downloaded a trial version of some conversion software and converted the file to an mpeg4 and then the video played fine. The problem was that the trial program I downloaded would only convert half the file (you know how it is...trail software that won't let you really do anything useful but they are trying to get you interested in buying their shit). And I tried to export the file in a different format from VLC and that didn't seem to work.
So I guess my question would be a three part one: 1)- Do you think my problem with .mov files could be related to my computer (hardware issues) 2)- What format of video do you prefer to work with when editing/etc.? 3)- What is a good free program for converting file formats of videos?

Oh, and a fourth question: 4)- Would you recommend another player besides VLC (or quicktime, obviously) to try to play .mov files?

sounds like a codec problem, usually vlc is the best media player, people prefer it to windows media player. if I were you I'd google necessary codec to run .mov

1. Could be hardware related, but I would look to software first. Unlikely it would be hardware related based on your description. Does it happen across all players? Does it happen with just .mov files? Do you get that same issue with anything else? (Youtube videos, movies, games etc?) Quicktime sucks BTW. You could try Quicktime Alternative. Although I agree w/ imachavel, sounds like a codec problem. Latest version of quicktime should be bundled with most of the necessary .mov codecs but not necessarily. You may try some different codecs or a codec pack... try the codecs on this page, it also might have some helpful info for you - http://www.doom9.org/. Check the downloads and guides section.
2. I'm no video guru or anything but I usually preferred to work with .avi files for editing. What are you using to transfer the files? any software for compression or conversion, or straight to .mov or what?
3. Good free programs for converting: VirtualDub - get this Pazera AnyVideoConverter Format Factory Quick Media Converter Handbrake
4.VLC is the go-to play-anything media player. Quicktime, Quicktime Alternative, or VLC are your options for .mov players pretty much. (and RealPlayer.. don't ever install it) MPlayer And DiVx. Oh BTW, get DiVX codecs/player, then try it. Or with a certain codec or something you could play .mov files in WMP.. but get DiVX.
Convert to .avi with right codecs/compression -> ?????? -> Profit
Although I'm pretty rusty on this stuff as it's been a while since I've done any actual video editing, so I may have given you some halfassed or outdated info, but hopefully that points you in the right direction. I used to do all my editing with Sony Vegas 8-10 or Adobe Premiere, and used VirtualDub I think for processing/compressing raw avi video Never had to mess with .mov files but I'm pretty sure yours is just a codec or some type of compression/conversion problem
Also you might want to try - MP4Cam2AVI - just stumbled across that. Sounds ideal for your situation.
The following may help: http://www.videohelp.com/guides/category/convert-articles-4;43#856 http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/224082-How-to-convert-MOV-files-created-by-a-Kodak-digital-camera
Good luck

I disagree. VLC has all the codecs built in. If VLC has a problem playing a video file, then it is a problem with VLC, a problem with the video file, or a problem with the computer. In this case, I would ensure that the latest version of VLC is installed (unlikely to help) and that the latest video drivers from the video card manufacturer are installed (this will probably fix the issue).

you sure vlc has built in codec? I never knew that. is this why people prefer it to windows media player? I do agree with shroomism however, it could be an application/program issue. it's been known to happen, but then I know very little about video editing or anything

VLC does have all the codecs built in, that's why it's great, it plays just about anything. He didn't mention having the problem in anything else, only .mov files which is why I was hesitant to just blame his computer. That's why I asked if it happens in anything else, other files etc.
He also says he gets different results playing the exact same file in Quicktime and VLC, so something's going on there. He says the video plays fine on the camera, and exporting it to another file format it also plays fine. So it's not the file. So it's probably a conversion problem of some sort. Especially if other formats work fine.
Definitely the latest video card drivers should be installed. But I don't think that sounds like the specific problem. Update VLC and drivers for sure. Try other players as well. If it does it across all player and different files then yeah it's probably a problem with the computer. If VLC plays other movie files fine then it's something in the way .mov files are being read by VLC, or .mov files just suck or are being encoded wrong or something

also remember, vlc has all the codecs built in, but that doesn't mean they are all activated does it? I know specifically when you install k lite codec, it gives a few options on what decoders to have running, if you don't enable them all, only the basic ones will be running. I didn't know vlc has all the codecs built in, but now that I know that, I'd be almost sure that they aren't all activated upon installation, if I were the op, I would go through each and every possible codec option, try turning them all on, and then see if the video works.
truthfully it does sound way more like a codec issue or a conversion issue then a hard ware issue, which would be effecting other things on the computer as well, btw do you have this?
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
try converting to different formats, then seeing if any of them work better. I'm almost positive it's not a hardware issue. if all this doesn't help, then I guess it must be.
