Mixed answers what to do??
    #14710424 - 07/03/11 10:02 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys!!! I have been using the search engin and have received mixed answers about flipping jars that are uncolonized or like 80% done.I used 1 pint jars "and I know its not recomended" and they have been colonizing for 22 days and started slowing down or stopped(the problems with most 1 pint jars). Some say flip them to help with the CO2 or GE and others say its the worst thing you can do because the dry verm layer stops contam and by flipping them theres no barrier to stop contam. Here is a pic of a jar

Any comments or advice

Amazingly good looking growth, man! My lil 1/2 pint cakes took darn near five weeks to colonize fully (the ones that did at all).

Id cover the holes up with micro pore tape and flip the jars.  See if you get more growth.  If nothing happens in a week I would birth the cakes and cut off the uncolonized parts and dunk and roll.

As you have experienced this is the problem with large jars they stall out a lot

I've cut the uncolonized parts off of pint cakes before and had good results. After a month or so some of them started fruiting in the jars. When I birthed them they had compressed quite a bit on the bottom. I don't use pints anymore...don't use PF anymore, but yours will be fine.

Yeah still noob but loving it all the way!!The pf tek is just to get a general feel of cultivating shrooms and how it all works.Going to take the advice of "unnamed" lol and flip them to see if anything happens. If nothing changes I'll cut of the uncolonized parts and then dunk an roll

The reason not to flip the jars is partly that this will
disrupt your verm layer and allow/help contaminants reach
the BRF.

One reason to flip jars (and maybe bump the cake away from
what was once the bottom of the jar) is to help the bottoms
of compacted cakes colonize.

You clearly waited until the tops of your cakes were
well colonized, so I think that you will do fine.

Good luck!

The part that is colonized looks like it is not completely colonized. There appears to be a small amount of brf/verm that I can see within the whiteness of the mycelium. How do you know it has stalled? How many days has it been without having any growth?

Well the bottom parts were really compact and the myceluim struggled to colonize that part of the substrate so I could see no visiable signs of growth for like 2-3 days. I flipped them om Monday and this morning I can see like 1 cm of new myceluim.Think the best thing to do know is just to be patient

Flip is what I have had success w/too.  I only do it when there is small fraction left to colonize.  If the top is fully colonized, it makes it really hard for contams to get in.  The verm layer already did it's job.  I would still try to reduce chance of contams by covering cake lid w/ alcohol wipe (sheet); when flipping/patting the cake.  patty cake, patty cake.

GL Omnipotent one.

Thats what I thought about the verm  but was still very carefull and I did use alcohol wipe on the lids. Will the rests of the substrate colonize ?And how long will it take because I dont want it do dry out

It will colonize.  I'd give it a week, mo o less.  I would not think that moisture is a issue.  Since the top colonized well, it's not too dry.  Make sure your humidity is low where it is incubating.  I tried a double tub setup once; with the outer tub having water to temp. My problem was humidity was 100%.  That screwed up my moisture content.  But I figured it out and removed from tub.  Eventually it finished. Took 4ever tho.

Best of luck...

Heard standard room temp. is the best for colonizing jars so thats what I did. I'll keep you guys posted on the results and thank you all for your advice :thanx:
