I've always used the coarser setting on the coffee grinder and gotten what I thought were pretty typical results.

I don't think the coarseness of the rice particles matters too much. And fine verm or medium verm work fine for cakes giving comparable results.

I'm having a hard time imagining where this "too fine of verm" is coming from. It's like verm dust or something? What's the product intended for?

Lastly, if you try using coarse verm for cakes, make sure you use fine verm for the top filter layer. I tried coarse and they almost all contaminated up top.

Typical results are results none the less, which is exactly what I am curios about.

This product is labeled "horticultural vermiculite," which I assume is its intended purpose. The product looks like dust, but I am sure that is just a result from handling, storage, and what ever process these bags go through to reach my local hardware store. Unfortunately, this is the only store in the area that carries vermiculite, so I have limited options.

Thanks for the response, I will heed your advice about the verm layer when the time comes!

Thats too bad, we have a store here called Peaveymart and they sell really nice coarse verm. Although coarse verm apparently tends to work a bit better because there is more surface area fine verm works good aswell.
