Can I just boil/steam the jars in a big pot and get comparable results? Or is a pc nescesary?

as shirley said, you can if you use the pf tek, but not if you are using grains.

My friend only uses that method and has gotten excellent results.

Make sure you put some type of cloth in-between the jars and the bottom of the pot. This will reduce the amount of heat the jars get hit directly with.

The water should go about half-way up the sides of the jars, no higher. Bring the water to a boil, and then play around with the temperature until you have a steady gentle boil. Put the lid on and wait anywhere from 45 - 75 minutes. Let them cool for a few hours before innoculation...

but its probley because he's using glass cups instead of 1/2 pint jars....

That may be the problem. My friend is used to using both the tightly sealed lid and a layer of tin-foil.

Fractional sterilization works with whole grains although the process is more time consuming. You can read up on fractional sterilization HERE
