Using a telescope?
    #14707032 - 07/02/11 03:00 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My mother bought a telescope from a little garage sale and frankly it doesn't look bad at all and not even old. I would like to be able to observe the stars with it but I have to say I have absolutely no knowledge of how to use it.

The only things I know is that there is a eye lens and a lens to see the sky. Do I have to do any adjustment before using it? I'm not looking to watch anything specific, maybe just take a closer look at the moon or some close planets or stars.

Any tips would help greatly!

You've given no description at all of the telescope, so I can't help you with much more than really general stuff.

You might try it out during the day a bit first. Use the lowest power (the eyepiece with the biggest number), and look at things that are as far away as possible.

At night, start with the moon. It's relatively easy to find, and you'll see more detail than you can believe. Saturn is also good right now in the evening sky. Beyond that, you need to learn the sky. Try magazines like Astronomy.

There is a place out there sort of like the Shroomery for astronomy, called Cloudy Nights. They have lots of people that can help you there.

Good luck!
