I hunt in West Auckland, and Im finding plenty, just from spots that no one else seems to know about... There's always more there when I go back. And half of them are rotting by the time I get to them. I'll think of you next time I fill up a bag Matt

Thoughts on these? Subs? Bit too naive to call them cyans?

Pretty much the entire life cycle of the fruit on display \o/

Nice patch of subs bro.
I had an American friend comment the other day "wow you got cyans here too, I thought they were native to the PNW".
"Nah mate, they're not the same, cos here we call them subaeruginosa".
Otherwise, you're hard pressed to tell any difference.
Do they microscopically differ?

Back to this old chestnut. I was looking on some photos of US cyans in Allan Rockefellers gallery and they really looked the same as some NZ "goldtops".
There are microscopic diffs, but most people collecting here dont have access to microscopes etc, so maybe some people are finding different species, who knows?
I think in earlier discussions in this thread Inski thinks we probably have both Ps. sub and Ps. cyan here. As do other mycologists.
Again, call em goldtops. species names are changing for fungi all the time anyway!
Anyway slightly off topic but some great discussion in Tripme about the "contaminating" benzo in "Kronic". Glad I never tried it, but was pleased with the Taihigh ones.

So this season I've had a lot of luck
I've been finding stupid amounts of P. subsecotioides
They are all over the place! on the side of the road under every flax bush, and each time i find them its never small amounts either. I usually find more then I would be comfortable carrying on me. I can't seem to find many P subaeruginosa though. I've found a few new spots this year, but nothing in comparison subsecotioides
I suppose I'm wondering if anyone else is finding this? I've spoken with a few people who seem to be finding the same thing, but I know some of them a pretty good at looking out for signs of them.
I'm wondering if there popping up due to the climate this year something?

went for a walk today. . . been finding these beautiful specimens all season only just got a camera. as there is still little information anywhere about this species, and any photos i have seen people only find a few specimens at a time, i think its relevant to show my finds as there are millions of these in nz, people just cannot find them! i find this amount usually once a week however they arent usually this big. google seems to tell me they are only in wellington area. i find these in northland and they are everywhere. this is my first post to the shroomery, feel free to ask any questions or tell me off if i do something wrong!

Records for those Weraroa show that it seems to be distributed throughout the North Island and also in Nelson.
But I guess could also be in the other parts of the South Island? Just a matter of looking. What kind of plants are they usually found near?
I believe Workman cultivated this species in the US. Details are on this site somewhere I think.

i have managed to get weraroa novae-zealandiae to grow from stem butts on cardboard and also from agar slices on cardboard, however growth is quite slow at least 4x slower than most gold top species i have tried. would be wicked if it will fruit in good yields. also trying to grow into wooden dowells to then inoculate logs, which im hoping will work well since they tend to grow from sticks or logs in the natural habitat. theres very little information regarding there cultivation, but im sure someone in newzealand has done it before? i imagine south island has them too, possibly some unknown species too

Yes Panaeolus subbalteatus (= P. cinctulus,) has been found in NZ. Grows on dung/ farm soil mostly, I think probably more on horsie dung.
I don't think is well known in NZ amongst mushroom gatherers. apparently not as strong as goldtops, Stamets suggests drying them to stop nausea etc.
