Injection Ports - Will these work??
#14701276 - 07/01/11 11:04 AM (13 years, 6 months ago) |

ordered a bunch of these:

hoping to be able to use them as injection ports on jar lids.
then i run into these:
http://themadseason.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=28
i would imagine they would work better or last longer, since theyre made specifically for what im doing with them. probably worth the money. hope someone can chime in.

What I didn't do... and wished I had... Was to take sandpaper to the outer surface of the drilled holes, to aid in the adhesion of the silicone glue.

very nice horizon. glad i picked up a couple dozen of these. im going to buy some whatman filters too and make all new lids for my jars. not the cheapest thing to do, but worth it in the end since theyre reuseable. less hassle too. im tired of drilling holes and stuffing with polyfil.
injection port + whatman filter = perfect jar lid for growing mycelium. this is going to be a fun project of putting these together.

I have used them for cakes and grains, so far... I have a half dozen of those Mad Season ones with the Syringe Filter Disk and vacutainer plug. Use those for myc-water and could use for LCs too...
It you are going the route of syringe filter disks for spawn; I've read it recommended to go with the 25mm (or larger); as the 13mm does not offer enough GE. However; the 13mm was advised to be sufficient for LCs.

nice to know. i was just thinking about what size (13 or 25mm) to get.
i just drilled holes in plastic lids. not the easiest thing to do. 2 of them cracked and the hole on one is too big for the plug. gotta find a better way to drill holes in this stuff.

I used a drillpress with a 1/2in forstner bit. Them holes came out pretty darn clean If I had to do it with a hand drill, I'd only have drilled one inoculation point, lol...
If you have a dremel with a lil sand-wheel, that should work for "scuffing" the surface nicely.

FYI forstner bits are made to drill wood, not metal. A standard drill bit will make perfect clean holes through a lid with a drill press, if you use it right. Don't force it, let the drill bit do the work.
also a silicone blob works just fine for an injection port. The only reason I can see needing these ports is pure vanity.

I JUST discovered that sciplus is physically located near where I live. Needless to say, making a trip tomorrow to pick up a proper alcohol burner and these injector plugs, and see in general what other stuff might be of use.
Question for you guys: when using these ports, do you stick the hot flame-sterilized needle through it or do you wipe off the needle first with an alcohol-soaked towel? RR's videos suggest not letting the needle cool before innoculating but I figured with these ports it might leave a hole.

They will burn the injector port... Oopsed that up once already. I keep alcohol in a lil 4oz spray bottle for spraying down everything, including a dry/hot needle (to cool it).

wipe your needle with alcohol and THEN flame sterilize. let the needle cool completely before injecting and inoculating. that heat could kill spores/LC

you just let a drop or two of spores or lc drip out of the needle to cool it. You can hear it sizzle then nothing, then its cool enough to poke into your port. It is completely pointless to wipe the needle with alcohol and then flame sterilize it.

Sandman; we are referring to a dry syringe. There is nothing to expel from it... Such as before insertion into a LC that is being used to inoculate several grain jars.
