($5 PER QUART) RYE, WBS, BRF, or POO
    #14698904 - 06/30/11 08:56 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have a canning business selling gourmet sauces. I want to start selling substrates because, people charge way to much money. ten bucks for a quart of rye?! five bucks for a half-pint of brf?!

My prices:

Quart Jar of Substrate (Rye, WBS, BRF, or Poo)
1-12  = $7.00
13-24 = $6.50
25-36 = $6.05
37-48 = $5.65
49-60 = $5.30
61+  = $5.00
for 2 injection ports and filter patch on lid add $.50 per jar

1 gallon filter bag (Rye, WBS, BRF, or Poo)
1-3  = $28.00
4-6  = $26.00
7-9  = $24.20
10-12 = $22.60
13-15 = $21.20
16+  = $20.00

I will also do custom mixes. (Who Does That?)
How many quart jars would you buy per month?
You may choose only one
Would you buy custom substrate mixes?
You may choose only one

i love your entrepreneurship, but honestly, i would never buy premade jars of anything when it's basically around a dollar or 2 (or maybe even less) to make 'em.  but good on ya for the effort.  if you were to become a shroomery sponsored vendor that would help in legitmacy.  not sure how one would go about doing that though.  gl man.  and just to be clear, i didn't mean any offense.

I can't knock your idea.  I've thought of trying something like this myself....of course I don't own a canning business and would need to gain more experience in general before trying.  That being said I think most growers would be reluctant to pay 5 dollars for a jar of sterilized grain.  I could see it being worth it for myself if I could get 100 jars for around 3 dollars a piece ( I don't even know if thats possible but I assume you get a great deal on the jars themselves and the grain if you're in this biz). I'm not trying to work a deal for myself by any means....just being honest...I'd rather take the time to pc 7 jars in my cooker than pay 5 dollars a jar to get them in the mail even if I was 100% confident that the contents were perfect. Get it down to 3 dollars for 100 and I'll place an order. haha....and no...I wouldn't buy custom....I like rye...then again..it's all I've used.

Might get some buyers but keep in mind most people going large scale don't use jars - they use bags. Bags are dirt cheap and hold a ton, and it's much faster to inoculate 10 bags than 50 or so jars. Plus, it's kind of a pain to get the shit out of jars, and you either have to wash them or throw them away, and neither option is ideal.

If a bag contams, you burn it. If a jar contams, you either throw it in the trash for someone to find, or have to open the poisonous thing up and try to clean it.

I'll be interested in jars when they start making 2 gallon wide mouth's.

On a side note, I never heard of a poo jar -- poop in general has kind of been replaced and wouldn't make any sense to put in jars. If you do own a real canning business, I sure as fuck hope you don't start making shit jars near food

If the 1 gallon bags have four quarts of rye in them, I would be interested, but I would have to know what S&H would be B4 I would commit to it. PM me.

As someone who is using a really tiny pc at the moment (I warped the bottom on my good one :frown:) I would rather spend a week making one quart jar a day than spend $7.00 a jar plus shipping. At least then I would know for sure that it's done right and if it's not, it's my own fault.

I can think of a dozen reasons why I'd rather use jars for large scale than bags, here's a few.
Plastic can get tiny holes in it which go unnoticed, contaming the bag.  You lose 3-4 jars worth when you contam one bag.  They get hot while colonizing.  They take a long time to colonize unless you're real good with your moisture levels.  They're one time use, making the long term cost much higher than investing in a hundred jars.  As far as cleaning jars, just rinse and pc them empty, ready to reuse.  And when I get a contam jar, I simply PC for 60 min and flush the remains when cooled, rinse it and dry it.

Burning plastic is bad for you and the earth

It would really help if you had some trade ratings, but I may be interested in a couple months. There is already at least one shroomery sponsor who sells pre-sterilized substrates, so selling in the marketplace or as a sponsor may be a bit of a hurdle.

i wasn't gonna say anything to defend jars, but i'm glad you did.

and i'm gonna have to repeat the earth thing for emphasis.. bags/plastics are bad for the environment!

I like jars.  I find something reuseable in this hobby indispensable, its rare.
Also, let me tell you about how many times ive accidently knocked off the rtv port while massaging a bag...

Is that shipping included? Because that would be the tie breaker, it would

probably cost just as much as the jars cost to ship them.

Through what company?  That's like a hundred pounds of rye when fully hydrated.

Also unsure anyone will want bags or quarts of brf, esp just straight....
I'm questioning your legitimacy based on your obvious inexperience
