Casing old cakes.
    #807857 -

I see alot of new guys asking about what to do with old cakes, how should they case them, etc. Here?s a quick rundown on a procedure that can work for you.

The following was created from four old, dry (post second flush) cakes which were crumbled onto a bed of moist vermiculite and covered with another 1/2" or so of moist vermiculite. The casing was misted, allowed to incubate until mycelium was seen poking through evenly across the pan (patched when necessary to facilitate this), then placed in a fruiting chamber.

I apologize for the somewhat dark picture. Also, since this was from four multi-spore cakes, the flush is going to be uneven. There are many small pins starting to poke through that you can?t see in the image.

Hope this helps.

I thank you for posting this. I was wondering what I could do with 2 old Lipa Yai cakes instead of tossing them. What strain is that in the picture?

The strain is EQ, but I'm certain any strain would do just about the same.

Good luck!

If the cakes don't show any contams, are they clean enough to be put into the casing? Or should they be washed somehow?

It works, but old spent cakes run a higher risk of contamination

A peroxide soak can help retard contams and rehydrate before casing, IMO
