Yup if you're not worried about high yeilds go with cakes. They are easier and faster from start to finish.

Of course if you ARE worried about yield, cakes also are the answer.

cakes require more fruiting space per substrate.
grains to coir gives you more substrate in the same amount of fruiting volume

Cakes give more mushrooms per square foot of FC use than coir. Also they are more efficient by substrate volume.

While the debate about how awesome cakes vs grain to bulk are will probably continue until eternity (ie see above ), the fastest I've ever seen is cakes w/ a little gypsum and coffee added for good measure (think someone made a tek called "Race Cakes" out of this...). If your not worried about yield, forgo the half pint jar for some polypropylene "miniround" disposable tupperware type things...cheap, and if memory serves me they have a 1/4 pint that works great.
Scientifically, cakes should also be faster since the BRF is a pretty simple substrate with much higher surface area than grain. This is what PF probably had in mind when he picked that as a substrate, as the faster the myc run, the less chance any slower running contam has.
I imagine going from LC-> Cakes will also cut some time off

if done properly, cakes should yield more per weight/space vs. grains to bulk.
I think the major problem w/ cakes & why people get frustrated w/ them is that they don't let them consolidate long enough; thus, they allow the mycelium to properly "digest" the substrate & have too much AE during colonization; therefore, they get early pins.
Bulk is less finicky than cakes, because we control ALL of the environmental factors during all stages of colonization. We use SFDs for grain colonization & a lid during bulk or extremely dense poly + a saran wrapped lid. No AE problems there.

PF tek would be quicker for sure, because you skip the spawning to bulk process.
MS on rye is normally 3-5 weeks for full colonization.

Swim just killed all the slack time because of the exams. Since it was in a hurry, the rye was prepared w/o the soak, just simmer and PC 90min/23PSI. (Making all this even more edgy, but saving a day). So starting today (inoculation) as a day 0.
