slow to pin cakes
    #1469286 - 04/18/03 04:04 AM (15 years, 6 days ago)

hi,

a friend of mine has had his cakes in a heated perlite filled tub for 5-7 days, one of them after three days the mycelium got all lumpy on the top, he's been misting/fanning 4-5 times a day. 2 days ago he turned the heater off overnight, a way to cold shock i guess, one cake is thai lipa yai & the lumpy one is puerto rican.

oh, the puerto rican was blueing before it was taken out of the jar & seems to be getting worse. My friend doesn't had a humidity gauge but he has been vigourously spraying it at least 4-5 times a day.

Also the only light its getting is thru the plastic lid, what's a good way to cut out part of the top if one doesnt have the right saw for it? He's been leaving the light on in the room in the hope that some light will get thru.

Any ideas would be great, they were fully colonized before my friend birthed them.

Thanks

you havent provided enough information:

What are the temperatures inside your terrarium?

You friend will need to know what the humidity is before he can proceed any further. Without knowing that, your friend is waisting their time.

What are you using for a terrarium? What material is it made out of (you mentioned the use of a saw)

Too dry. Did you dunk your cakes? If not, you might speed things up a bit by dunking.

Or, if you don't see any pinning and the knots on the PR cake haven't grown, you could case them.

That should be plenty of light. It only takes a fraction of a second.

they were heated at 27 degrees celcius but my friend has since put them down to 24 degress after cold shocking overnight in the fridge, see how it goes from there - he read he should slow down on the fanning/misting?

thanks
